The NESCAC has released its Players of the Week for the week ending on February 22. The conference recognizes student-athletes in each sport each week for their contributions to their teams, based on information provided by the athletic communications offices on each campus. During the winter season, men's and women's basketball and men's and women's ice hockey players of the week will be announced on Mondays.
NESCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week | Weekly Release
Scott Gyimesi – Tufts – Sr. – F – Fair Haven, N.J.
In the NESCAC Quarterfinals, Gyimesi tallied a double-double of 29 points and 13 rebounds. The senior shot 12-of-16 for the game and 3-of-5 from deep, while adding two blocks and two steals. The double-double was his 15th of the season, and his 50th of his career, as he helped Tufts to a 99-84 win over Colby College. Gyimesi is fourth in the league in scoring and leads the NESCAC in rebounding at 9.8 caroms per game.
NESCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week | Weekly Release
Sarah Hughes – Bates – Jr. – G – Rumson, N.J.
Hughes scored 20 of her season-high 23 points in the final 25 minutes to propel the Bobcats to a 67-64 overtime victory over Hamilton in a NESCAC Quarterfinal game. The junior shot 10-for-18 from the field, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out four assists, and matched her season-high with three steals. Bates trailed by 20 points at halftime and by five with under a minute left before Hughes drilled a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two. She scored five of the Bobcats' nine points in overtime.
NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Player of the Week | Weekly Release
Andrew Palena – Amherst – Jr. - G – Trinity, Fla.
Needing two wins to extend their streak of never missing the NESCAC Tournament, Palena was instrumental in making that happen for the Mammoths, stopping all 54 shots he faced as Amherst blanked Middlebury, 3-0, and Williams, 6-0. The shutouts were the first of Palena's collegiate career. In the win over Middlebury, the junior made nine stops in the second period as the Mammoths extended their lead from 1-0 to 3-0, and 11 saves in the final stanza as Amherst protected its lead. Palena finished the game with 28 saves. Palena stopped 26 shots in the win over Williams, including 13 in the third period alone.
NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Player of the Week | Weekly Release
Marie-Eve Marleau – Amherst – Sr. – F – Saint-Anicet, Quebec
Marleau had a hand in all four Mammoth goals last week, scoring one and assisting on three others, as No. 6 Amherst swept Hamilton, 1-0 (OT) and 3-0. In overtime on Saturday, Marleau drove to the net, taking a close-angle shot that resulted in a rebound, which led to the game-winner from teammate Gretchen Dann. Sunday, Marleau scored just under four minutes into the game with what proved to be the game-winner, then assisted on the other two Mammoth goals in the 3-0 win. The senior’s 11 assists this season are a career high, as is her 19 points. Marleau’s goal Sunday was her eighth of the season, tying a career high.
