Pair of Upsets Highlight 2025 NESCAC Men's Soccer Quarterfinals

Two of the four higher seeds were victorious in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 NESCAC Men’s Soccer Championship. No. 1 Tufts and No. 2 Wesleyan advanced through to the semifinals and will be joined by No. 5 Conn. College and No. 6 Middlebury. The Jumbos will host the remaining rounds of the tournament at Bello Field on November 8 and 9.

No. 1 Tufts def. No. 8 Bates, 1-0 | Box Score
After a scoreless 75 minutes of action, Daniel Yanez converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute to lift top-seeded Tufts to a 1-0 victory over Bates. A Bobcat defender was called for a handball in the penalty area, which resulted in Yanez improving to 4-for-4 in PKs this season. The Jumbos peppered 17 shots at the Bobcats’ net, but Bates goalkeeper George Nassar was hard to beat, making six saves. Tufts will host the remaining rounds of the NESCAC Tournament for the first time since 2017, the same year it won its first NESCAC title.

No. 2 Wesleyan def. No. 7 Amherst, 3-2 | Box Score
With No. 7 Amherst leading 2-1 and 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Aiden Londergan helped secure the win for Wesleyan by contributing to two Cardinal goals. He assisted Joshwin Jennings’ goal to tie the game at 2-2 and then scored the game-winner with 14 seconds left, giving Wesleyan a 3-2 victory. Yousuf Saeed scored in the 19th minute to put the Cardinals up 1-0, but Amherst responded with back-to-back goals from Vincent Akanbo at 43:03 and 60:45 to take the lead. The Cardinals fought back with Londergan leading the effort for the comeback win. Wesleyan advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2015, the last time it played in a championship game.

No. 6 Middlebury def. No. 3 Bowdoin, 2-1 | Box Score
A pair of late goals by Will Sawin and Colin Dugan helped No. 6 Middlebury defeat No. 3 Bowdoin, 2-1. The Polar Bears, who experienced their first loss since September, led 1-0 through 53 minutes after Liam Myers scored in the 19th minute. Sawin equalized at 73:41 to level the score at 1-1. Dugan’s second goal of the season in the 82nd minute, off a free kick, put the Panthers ahead 2-1. Middlebury, last year’s NESCAC Runner-Up, held on for the win and advanced to the semifinals for the sixth consecutive season.

No. 5 Conn. College def. No. 4 Williams, 2-1 | Box Score
Gavin Vaden Berg’s goal in the 57th minute broke a 1-1 tie and gave No. 5 Connecticut College a 2-1 win at No. 4 Williams. The Camels, the defending NESCAC Champion, reached the semifinals for the fifth straight year. Williams took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute off a goal by Alex Bethencourt. Max Haberman’s second goal of the year tied the game at 1-1, and the teams headed to halftime all square. Just 11 minutes into the second half, Vanden Berg’s strike from outside the penalty box hit off the crossbar and into the goal to give the Camels a 2-1 lead. Conn. College held off the Ephs, with TJ Krongard credited with seven stops.
