Every Monday during the season, one NESCAC Player of the Week will be selected based on information submitted by the athletic communications offices at member institutions.
NESCAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Joshwin Jennings – Wesleyan - Jr. – Forward – Parsippany, N.J.
Jennings netted the game-tying goal on a penalty kick in Tuesday's 1-1 draw in the regular season finale against Conn. College. That crucial point for Wesleyan secured the No. 2 seed for the Cardinals in the NESCAC Tournament. Jennings also scored the game-tying goal in a 3-2 come-from-behind win in the NESCAC Quarterfinal against Amherst. With the Cardinals trailing 2-1 with under 10 minutes to play, Jennings scored from just outside the box with 9:18 remaining. In the final minute, Jennings initiated the action that led to teammate
Aiden Londergan’s (Barrington, Ill.) game-winner with just 14.2 seconds left on the clock. The win propelled the Cardinals into the NESCAC Semifinals for the first time since 2015.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Vincent Akanbo (Old Akrade, Ghana) scored all three Mammoth goals last week – the first three of his collegiate career. The rookie’s goal with 8:17 left in the game proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Trinity on Tuesday. Akanbo also sparked a rally on Saturday in the NESCAC Quarterfinals, scoring in the 44th and 61st minutes to give Amherst a 2-1 lead before it ultimately fell to Wesleyan, 3-2.
Bates – Senior
Wilson Smith (Seattle, Wash.) scored a dramatic goal in the 90th minute to help Bates secure a 1-1 draw in the regular-season finale against Colby. The Mules had gone ahead 1-0 with only 58 seconds remaining in regulation. But Smith scored the equalizer with just seven seconds on the clock. It was Smith's third goal of the season and the fifth of his collegiate career. Bates finished the year with a 7-6-3 overall record, its best season since 2019.
Bowdoin - Sophomore
Liam Myers (Wilmette, Ill.) scored a first-half goal for the Polar Bears in their NESCAC Quarterfinal against Middlebury on Saturday. It was the third goal of the season for Myers, all of which have given Bowdoin a lead.
Colby – Rookie
Santi Canencio Moreno (Medellin, Colombia) scored with less than a minute to play on Tuesday against Bates to break a scoreless deadlock. The play was credited with two assists as senior
Jasper Paez (Bedford, Mass.) headed a corner entry from first-year
Grady Kirk (Sudbury, Mass.) to the head of Canencio Moreno for a brilliant volley to close the season.
Conn. College – Senior
Gavin Vanden Berg (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) led Conn. College back to the NESCAC Semifinals for the fifth straight season, as the Camels won at Williams on Saturday. With the score tied at 1-1 early in the second half, Vanden Berg rifled a shot from 30 yards out that went off the crossbar and in, putting Conn. College in front in an eventual 2-1 victory.
Middlebury – Junior
Colin Dugan (Avon, Conn.) was the hero for Middlebury in a 2-1 road upset of Bowdoin in Saturday’s NESCAC Quarterfinals. With 8:58 remaining in regulation, the midfielder stepped up and converted a bending free kick from just inside the 18-yard box into the upper left corner of the net to put the Panthers ahead for good. The tally is Dugan’s second in the past three contests.
Tufts – Senior goalkeeper
Nikola Antic (Waltham, Mass.) helped the Jumbos advance in the NESCAC Tournament with a 1-0 shutout win over Bates. The clean sheet was the senior’s ninth of the season, which tied him for fourth-most in a season at Tufts (Scott Greenwood - 2015 & Conner Mieth - 2018). Antic’s 23 career shutouts rank second all-time at Tufts behind only the 32 from Greenwood.
Williams – Sophomore
Alex Bethencourt (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) scored for No. 19-ranked Williams (No. 4 seed) in the 22nd minute of the NESCAC Quarterfinal against No. 25 and fifth-seeded Connecticut College Saturday afternoon on Cole Field.
