NESCAC Weekly Release - October 15, 2024

The NESCAC has released its Players of the Week for the week of October 15. The conference recognizes student-athletes for each sport based on their contributions to their team each week. During the fall season, football, field hockey, men's soccer, women's soccer, and volleyball will be announced on Mondays.

Field Hockey | Weekly Release & Honor Roll
Kellyn Scheel – Conn. College - Fy. – F/M – Palo Alto, Calif. 
Scheel scored three goals and led the Camels to a 2-0 record, including a 2-1 victory over No. 22 Hamilton. The rookie scored two goals, including the first of her collegiate career, in a 6-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State. Scheel also tallied the goal that proved to be the difference in the victory over the Continentals, giving Conn its first win against Hamilton since 2017.

Offensive Player of the Week

Connor McClellan – Middlebury – Fy. – RB – Columbus, Ohio
McClellan played a pivotal role in Middlebury’s 32-29 overtime victory over Williams on Saturday. The rookie running back recorded a career-high 95 yards rushing (8.6 ypc) with three touchdowns, including the game-winner. The Panther also had one reception for 12 yards. McClellan’s 7-yard run allowed Middlebury to take a 14-13 halftime advantage and his 37-yard run in the third period tied the game. McClellan sealed the Panthers’ win when punched in the final touchdown from one yard out.

Defensive Player of the Week
Jake Edwards – Wesleyan – Gr. – LB – Rockwall, Texas
Edwards recovered a strip sack fumble and sprinted 88 yards down the field for a walk-off overtime defensive touchdown as the Cardinals defeated Colby 23-17 in overtime on Saturday. The walk-off win is the second touchdown of Edwards' career. The linebacker added six tackles and a quarterback hurry to his stat totals against the Mules.

Special Teams Player of the Week
Ivan Shuran – Williams – Sr. – K – Medina, Ohio
Shuran broke his own Ephs' record for most field goals in a game with five on Saturday at Middlebury. The senior accounted for 17 of the Ephs’ 29 points against the Bantams with a 5-for-5 effort on field goals and 2-for-2 on PATs. In the third quarter, Shuran connected on a 43-yard field goal, the second-longest field goal in the conference this year. Shuran’s 17 points are the most by a NESCAC kicker this season

Men's Soccer | Weekly Release & Honor Roll
Tyler Huck – Bowdoin – Jr. – M – Ross, Calif.
Huck scored a hat trick and recorded an assist to have a hand in all of the Polar Bears' scoring in a 4-1 win at Trinity on Saturday. The first hat trick of Huck's career occurred in a span of 16:48 in the first half and is the fastest hat trick by a Bowdoin player since 2014.

Women's Soccer | Weekly Release & Honor Roll
Stefanie Stoj – Wesleyan – Jr. – F – Vernon, Conn.
Stoj led Wesleyan to a pair of 1-0 victories in NESCAC play as she scored both Cardinal goals. The junior started with a tally in the 47th minute, which proved enough to lift Wesleyan past Trinty, 1-0. Stoj followed up with a left-footed strike from just inside the box in the 68th minute that sealed a 1-0 win over Williams. That goal against the Ephs broke Williams' six-game shutout streak. 

Volleyball | Weekly Release & Honor Roll
Cyanne Jones – Colby – Fy. – MB – Pasadena, Calif.
Jones led Colby to two conference wins last weekend.  While Williams has had Colby's number as of late, winning 34 of the last 36 sets heading into Friday’s match, the Mules defeated the Ephs in five sets to earn their first victory against Williams since 2005. Jones set a career-high with seven total blocks to go with nine kills against the Ephs. In Saturday's matchup of the NESCAC's unbeatens, the Mules took down Middlebury in straight sets behind Jones' 11 kills and 0.556 hitting percentage, both career-highs. Jones finished the week hitting .436 with 20 kills and 12 blocks for the Mules who remain unbeaten in NESCAC action at 6-0 (16-1 overall).
