The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) announced its annual volleyball awards.
Conference coaches selected Colby junior Brady Moseley as the NESCAC Player of the Year, while Wesleyan junior Elliana Moreno was named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, and Bowdoin first-year Zoe Ryu earned NESCAC Rookie of the Year. The league coaches selected the Tufts staff as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year. The All-NESCAC teams were selected via a vote of the 11 conference head coaches.
Moseley, who also earned All-NESCAC First Team honors for the third straight season, is just the second player from Colby to earn the NESCAC Player of the Year honor (Caitlin Cleaver – 2005). Moseley leads the NESCAC in kills (313) and ranks third in kills per set (3.33). She has played in 26 matches and is hitting .221 for the Mules with 19 service aces on the season. Moseley is averaging 2.74 digs per set and has 34 blocks on the defensive side. Mosley helped the Mules finish as the NESCAC Runner-Up for the second straight season and earn an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.
Moreno is the fourth Cardinal in six seasons to garner the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year award, and it is the sixth time a Wesleyan player has been selected for the award. The junior is averaging 4.45 digs per set and has 347 total digs on the year while also serving up 27 aces. Moreno has contributed to a Wesleyan defense that ranks second in opponent hitting percentage, limiting teams to .137 in matches. Moreno and the Cardinals finished the regular season as the top seed in the NESCAC Tournament and were an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament. Wesleyan will host an NCAA Regional.
Ryu, an All-NESCAC First Team selection, is the third consecutive Polar Bear to earn the NESCAC Rookie of the Year honor and the fifth Bowdoin player overall to win the award. Ryu leads the NESCAC in service aces this season with 40. The first-year led Bowdoin in kills (221), kills per set (2.87), and averaged 2.38 digs per set with 38 blocks. Bowdoin qualified for the NESCAC Tournament for the 18th consecutive season.
The Tufts staff of head coach Cora Thompson (23rd season) and assistants Resa Provanzano and Grace Krumpack were honored by their peers as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year. It is the ninth time in Thompson’s career that the staff has been recognized with the award. The Jumbos, who have qualified for every NESCAC Tournament, earned the No. 4 seed and finished as the NESCAC Champion, winning the title for the fourth time. The Jumbos received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and were selected to host a regional.
