Middlebury's Morris Wins NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Title

ORLANDO, Fla. - Middlebury's Stan Morris was crowned the 2022 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Champion on Sunday. The senior came back from down a set to edge Johns Hopkins' Vishnu Joshi, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 for the trophy at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

Trailing love-30 in the first set, Morris came back to tie the match at 30-30, but Joshi held on to take a 1-0 lead. Morris responded with a sweep in the second game, not allowing a single point to knot the contest 1-1. The set was tied four more times before Joshi pulled away. The 11th game was back-and-forth with Joshi edging Morris for the win, before Joshi blanked Morris in the 12th game to take the 7-5 first-set triumph.

The second set was similar, as Morris and Joshi went point-for-point in most games. This time, Morris outlasted Joshi, 7-5, to force a third set for the championship match.

Morris carried his momentum into the final set, jumping out to the largest lead of the match at 5-1. He nearly clinched the contest in the seventh game with a 30-love lead, but Joshi came back to claim the game and cut the deficit to three (5-2). Morris cruised in the final game to secure the title with a 6-2 final score.

Morris caps his career with a 55-23 record in singles play, winning both the ITA Cup Singles and the NCAA Singles titles this year. He became just the second Middlebury men's tennis player to win the national crown, and the third Panther overall.

Morris is the sixth NESCAC tennis player to win the NCAA Singles title and third since 2017 to claim the crown, joining fellow Panther Lubomir Cuba (2017) and Bowdoin's Grant Urken (2018).
