Tufts Wins First NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Title

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Tufts Jumbos outdueled Williams to capture their first NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship at the Colby Aquatics Center. The Jumbos and Ephs traded the lead several times during the evening session, but key performances in the final two events of the night, the 3-meter diving competition and the 400 freestyle relay, clinched the title for Tufts.

Tufts' win snaps the streak of seven straight championships won by Williams and Jumbos are just the third team to win a NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship in the history of the event (Amherst - 1, Tufts - 1, Williams - 19). Tufts finished the championships with 1809 points while the Ephs concluded the meet with 1758.5 points. Amherst (1136 points), Bates (1020 points), and Bowdoin (877.5 points) rounded out the top five teams in the standings.
 
The Ephs entered the final day of competition with a slim 7.5 point lead and extended their advantage to 30.5 points following the 1650 freestyle and the 200 backstroke. Williams sophomore Lillie Bushway won the NESCAC title in the 1650 freestyle with a pool-record time of 16.57.13 and first-year Sophia Verkleeren finished third in the 200 backstroke. Bates first-year Sophie Cassily won the backstroke event with a pool-record time of 1:57.98 and Tufts senior Abby Claus was the runner-up (2:00.44).
 
Tufts sophomore Jillian Cudney won the 100 freestyle in a pool-record time of 50.52 and teammate Claire Brennan added a third-place effort and 27 points to help Tufts take a 30.5 lead. Ella Riccio, a first-year from Bowdoin, was the runner-up (50.61).
 
Williams regained the lead following a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Amanda Wager touched the wall first in a pool-record time of 2:12.98 and was followed by teammates Charlotte Wishnack (2:16.52) and Molly Craig (2:17.22) to help the Ephs build a 65.5 point lead.
 
The Ephs maintained a slight advantage (7.5 points) following the 200 butterfly and a second-place finish by junior Samantha Kilcoyne. Amherst senior Marie Fagan claimed the NESCAC title with a pool-record time of 2:00.58 and senior Andrea Higgins of Connecticut College (2:02.01) rounded out the top three swimmers.
 
The lead changed hands again following the 3-meter diving competition. Bowdoin first-year Sadie Smith won the event with 466.15 points and Amherst's Hannah Karlin, the 1-meter champion, placed second (454.20 points). Junior Alaina Kosko picked up 27 points for the Jumbos with a third-place finish (452.15) and Sydney Ho added a ninth-place finish (373.60 points) to help Tufts take a 16.5 point advantage, 1719 to 1702.5, heading into the final event of the championships, the 400 freestyle relay.
 
The Jumbos clinched the title the foursome of Jillian Cudney, junior Katelin Isakoff, Claire Brennan, and senior Mary Hufziger set a NESCAC record, a NESCAC meet record and a pool record in the 400 freestyle relay with a winning time of 3:22.46. The previous record of 3:22.71 was set by the Ephs in 2012. Williams placed second (3:25.31) and Connecticut College finished third (3:26.93).
 
The NESCAC individual awards were handed out to conclude the championship meet.
 
NESCAC Swimmer of the Year: Amanda Wager, Williams
Wager, a sophomore, is the fifth straight Williams swimmer to be named NESCAC Swimmer of the Year. She won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, finished runner-up in the 50 breaststroke, and was a member of the winning 200 and 400 medley relay squads.
 
NESCAC Diver of the Year: Hannah Karlin, Amherst
The 2022 championships mark the fourth straight year a Mammoth has won the NESCAC Diver of the Year honor. Karlin, a senior, won the 1-meter competition and placed second on the 3-meter board.
 
NESCAC Rookie of the Year: Sophie Cassily, Bates
Cassily is the second straight Bobcat to garner the NESCAC Rookie of the Year honor. She won the 200 backstroke and the runner-up in the 100 and 50 backstroke events. She also contributed to the Bobcats' 200 medley relay squad that finished second.
 
NESCAC Career High-Point Swimmer Award: Molly Craig, Williams
Craig totaled 356 points in NESCAC Championship meets over her career with the Ephs. She was a four-time winner of the 400 IM and captured the NESCAC title in the 200 IM three times.
 
NESCAC Career High-Point Diver Award: Olivia Rieur, Middlebury
Rieur is the third Panther to be named the NESCAC Career High-Point Diver Award winner, joining Alanna Hanson (2008) and Elissa Denunzio (2018).
 
NESCAC Swimming Coach of the Year: Adam Hoyt
Hoyt picks up his second NESCAC Swimming Coach of the Year honor after leading the Jumbos to their first NESCAC title in program history.
 
NESCAC Diving Coach of the Year: Kai Robinson
Robinson is the NESCAC Diving Coach of the Year for the four straight championships.
