The top two seeds from the NESCAC East and West Divisions advanced out of the best-of-3 quarterfinal series to the NESCAC Baseball Championship Weekend set for May 8-10 at Trinity College.
Amherst vs. Colby
At Memorial Field in Amherst, Massachusetts, the Mammoths swept Colby, winning two low-scoring affairs after dropping a 10-inning opener in Game 1.
Colby rallied for a run in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2 before Jeb Burkhart's RBI single in the 10th gave the Mules a 3-2 victory. Kyle Bourque threw five scoreless innings in relief, retiring 11 consecutive batters via groundout to earn the win.
Amherst answered emphatically in Game 2 on Saturday behind Saahi Jetti's complete-game no-hitter. Jetti struck out eight and walked three, working through traffic but never allowing a hit as the Mammoths won 3-0. Four Colby errors helped Amherst manufacture all three runs, two of which came on unearned plays in the seventh.
In the series finale, Corey Aubuchon drove in a run in the second and Will Burns homered in the fourth to give Colby a 2-1 lead heading into the late innings, but Amherst rallied and evened the score with a run in the seventh. Leo Foust delivered a pinch-hit walk-off single in the ninth to give the Mammoths a 3-2 victory.
Tufts vs. Hamilton
Tufts swept Hamilton in two games in the NESCAC Quarterfinals at Sol Gittleman Park, outscoring the Continentals 17-9 across a pair of back-and-forth contests to advance.
The opener on Friday was a tale of two halves. Tufts jumped out to a 6-0 lead through three innings, getting four runs in the second on a pair of two-run singles from Tom Pender and Jesse McCullough, then adding two more runs on errors in the third. Hamilton refused to fold, erupting for four runs in the seventh, keyed by Ethan Righter's two-run single and Alfonso Rada's two-run single to tie the game at 6-6. But James Henshon's solo home run in the eighth proved the difference, and Derek Desmarais shut the door with two scoreless innings to earn the 7-6 win for the Jumbos.
Saturday's Game 2, Emmet Christian threw five scoreless innings before handing off a 5-0 lead. Hamilton mounted a three-run sixth on Gianni DiCerbo's two-run double, but Tufts answered with three more runs in the fifth and added insurance to close out a 10-3 victory.
Middlebury vs. Bowdoin
Middlebury won two of three against Bowdoin in a wild weekend series at Middlebury, with all three games producing double-digit run totals and late-inning drama.
Middlebury took the opener Friday in stunning fashion. Trailing 11-10 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Anthony Pellagrini launched a walk-off three-run homer to cap a four-run frame and deliver a 14-11 victory. Cooper Bohlig went 3-for-5 with a triple and a homer, driving in four runs for the Panthers.
Bowdoin evened the series in the first game Saturday behind a dominant performance from Will Logue, who homered and tripled while driving in five runs. Hugh Devine earned the win in relief, and Alex Saavedra closed it out to preserve an 8-5 victory. Logue's three-hit day keyed a Polar Bears offense that built a 6-2 lead they never relinquished.
In the decisive third game, Middlebury jumped out to a 16-6 lead after eight innings and held on despite a stunning 10-run Bowdoin ninth capped by Steven Vargo's two-run double to win 16-10. Alex Faust earned the victory with six scoreless innings.
Trinity vs. Wesleyan
In Hartford, Trinity defeated Wesleyan in a three-game series at DiBenedetto Stadium, outscoring the Cardinals 24-11 across three contests to close out a dominant weekend on its home field.
The Bantams opened the series with an 11-3 victory behind a complete-game gem from Joe Capano (4-1), who scattered three hits while striking out seven. Trinity's offense erupted for four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings, powered by home runs from Timmy Domizio, Tyler Bernstein and Aidan Stern.
Wesleyan rebounded in Game 2 on Saturday with a 7-1 victory behind Shamus Kelly's (5-3) complete-game effort. Kelly fanned 11 batters while surrendering just two hits. Jake Acker went deep, and Kato Mangum provided two RBI as the Cardinals squared the series.
In Saturday's finale, Trinity left no doubt, rolling to a 12-2 win behind Andrew Oppenheimer (7-1), who allowed just one earned runs across six innings. Cole Mascolo went 3-for-5 with a triple, double and four RBI, while Domizio and Luis Saldivia each added home runs.
