Top Three Seeds and No. 5 Amherst Reach NESCAC Men's Tennis Semifinals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - For the third consecutive NESCAC Men’s Tennis Championship, the fifth-seeded team has reached the semifinals. The Amherst Mammoths, along with top-seeded Tufts, No. 2 Bowdoin, and No. 3 Middlebury, all won quarterfinal matches.
 
Semifinal matches are set for 11 a.m. at John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts in Middletown, Conn. The Jumbos will face the Mammoths in one semifinal, while the Panthers and Polar Bears will match up in the other.

No. 1 Tufts def. No. 8 Bates, 4-0
Tufts extended its win streak to 14 straight matches and improved to 20-2 with a 4-0 sweep of No. 8 Bates. The Jumbos’ No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams earned 6-1 wins to take a 1-0 lead. Kaetan Mehta’s 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles secured the second point for Tufts. Stavros Mastrogamvrakis added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, and Andrej Djokic clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. The Jumbos reach the semifinals for the fifth year in a row.
 
No. 2 Bowdoin def. No. 7 Colby, 4-0
Bowdoin moved to 16-3 with a 4-0 win over Colby. The Polar Bears took a 1-0 lead with a pair of shutout doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 2. On the singles courts, straight-set wins from No. 5 Simon Catanzaro (6-1, 6-2) and No. 6 Andrew Mendelson (6-2, 6-3) and a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory by Kiran Garapati at No. 2 powered the Polar Bears into the semifinals for the fourth year in a row.
 
No. 3 Middlebury def. No. 6 Wesleyan, 4-3
Middlebury (14-4) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pull out a 4-3 win over Wesleyan. Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts, and Chase Burke added a point for the Cardinals at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-1). Thehan Wijemanne’s 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles got the Panthers on the board and Hugh Hentschel’s 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 evened the match at 2-2. Wesleyan regained the lead, 3-2, behind Ryuto Saito’s 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Middlebury scored a win at No. 6 by Andrew Yim (6-4, 6-4) to tie the match again. At the top of the ladder, Julian Wu delivered the clinching point (7-5, 7-6 (3)) to propel the Panthers to the semifinals for the fifth straight tournament.
 
No. 5 Amherst def. No. 4 Williams, 4-0
Amherst improved to 13-5 with a 4-0 sweep of Williams. The Mammoths won on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts to take an early lead. Rex Harrison and Andreas Sillaste provided points in singles at the No. 5 and No. 1 positions, respectively. Albert Hu delivered the clinching point on the No. 6 court. The Mammoths advance to the NESCAC Semifinals for the second consecutive season.
