Trinity & Tufts Bow Out of NCAA Baseball Tournament

Trinity dropped a 7-4 decision at Russell Sage, and the Tufts Jumbos suffered losses to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Kean to bow out of the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

Kean def. Tufts 11-6 | Box Score
Kean erupted for six runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth to defeat Tufts in an elimination game in Medford, Mass.

Nick Sellari went 2-for-5 with four RBI to pace the Cougars, while Justin Teixeira added three hits and two RBI. Jason Basilicata worked all nine innings for Kean, allowing just three earned on 11 hits while striking out six.

The fourth-inning outburst began with Jude Clough's leadoff double and was fueled by a series of hits, a throwing error, and a sacrifice fly that sent six runs across before the inning ended. Kean added four more in the fifth, highlighted by Sellari's two-run single and a run-scoring hit by Teixeira that pushed the lead to 10-0.

Tufts made things interesting with three runs in the fifth on Malcolm Whitfield's two-run double and mounted another late charge, plating three more in the ninth on Whitfield's two-run double. But the deficit proved too large. Whitfield finished 2-for-4 with four RBI in a losing effort. Michael O'Brien took the loss, surrendering six runs in 3.1 innings. Tufts ended its season with a 31-11 record.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps def. Tufts, 5-2 | Box Score
Rider Gordon's two-run home run in the first inning gave Claremont-Mudd-Scripps an early lead, and the Stags pulled away with a three-run eighth to defeat Tufts, 5-2, in Medford, Mass.

Tegin Maloney went the distance for CMS, scattering seven hits over nine innings while striking out seven to improve to 5-2. The right-hander worked around traffic throughout, allowing just one earned run before the Jumbos pushed across a consolation run in the ninth on Cole Bohane's RBI single.

Cole Donato absorbed the loss despite a strong outing, allowing four earned on nine hits over eight innings. The junior entered the game 9-2 but couldn't escape the eighth, when Jett Shue and Bryce Didrickson hit back-to-back doubles before Gordon's run-scoring single and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from Max Pemberton capped the scoring.

Gordon finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Didrickson added a two-run double. James Henshon went 2-for-4 with an RBI double for Tufts, which moved to 31-10 on the year.

Russell Sage def. Trinity, 7-4 | Box Score
Jayden Kennedy and Collin Casey each hit solo home runs to back a complete-game effort from Aidan Green, as Russell Sage College held off Trinity in a back-and-forth contest Saturday in Schenectady, N.Y.

Green worked all nine innings, allowing three earned on eight hits with six strikeouts to improve to 8-1. The right-hander consistently got out of trouble when Trinity threatened, stranding six Bantam baserunners.

Russell Sage struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Trinity rallied to tie it 2-2 with a two-run third, aided by a Russell Sage fielding error. The Gators reclaimed the lead for good with a two-run fourth on Casey's two-run blast, then extended the advantage to 6-2 in the fifth on an RBI single by Joseph Karpierz and a run-scoring groundout by Kennedy. Kennedy's solo shot in the seventh provided the final margin.

Trinity's Aidan Stern provided the offensive highlight for the Bantams, going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the seventh that briefly made it a 6-4 game. Drew McGowan took the loss for Trinity, surrendering six runs over 4.2 innings. Trinity finishes its season at 27-15.
