Amherst & Williams Advance in NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Tournament with OT Wins

Amherst and Williams earned overtime wins on home ice to advance in the NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Tournament. The Mammoths earned a 2-1 win over Saint Benedict at Orr Rink, while the Ephs pulled out a 2-1 victory over Plattsburgh State at Lansing Chapman Rink.

Savana Littlewood scored 3:18 into overtime to lift Williams past Plattsburgh State, 2-1, on Saturday in Williamstown, Mass.

Eph forward Charlotte Fetherston tied the game 2:26 into the third period, finishing a feed from Lucie Bond to knot it at 1-1 and force overtime. Littlewood then ended it in the extra session, converting a pass from Annie Gallagher and Laney Mead to send the Ephs to the next round.

Plattsburgh State had taken a 1-0 lead on Bailey Mackellar's goal at 5:19 of the second period, assisted by Zoe Puc and Taya Balfour, and the Cardinals held that advantage into the final period before Fetherston's equalizer.

Williams goaltender Erin Pye made 28 saves to earn the victory, while Plattsburgh State's Maddy Stetson stopped 22 of 24 shots in the loss.

Williams improves to 19-4-5 and will travel to face two-time defending NCAA Champion UW-River Falls in the quarterfinals on March 21. Plattsburgh State ends its season with a 20-8-1 record.

Gretchen Dann scored 2:36 into overtime to propel Amherst past Saint Benedict, 2-1, on Saturday at Orr Rink.

Dann, assisted by Natalie Fu, ended the game moments after Saint Benedict had nearly escaped with an upset with back-to-back shot opportunities that were saved by Natalie Stott, capping a dramatic comeback for the Mammoths.

Saint Benedict scored just 40 seconds into the second period when Jorja Jusczak converted a power-play goal, assisted by Chloe Lewis and Shae Stinnett, to make it 1-0. The Bennies held that advantage through two periods before Ayla Abban tied it 7:28 into the third period on a goal assisted by Calleigh Brown and Bea Flynn.

Stott made 24 saves in the victory for Amherst, while Saint Benedict's Lexi Badali stopped 43 of 45 shots in a losing effort.

Amherst (21-2-6) advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face Elmira. Saint Benedict finishes the season with a 16-9-4 record.
