Four Records Fall on Day 2 of NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship

WATERVILLE, Maine – Day 2 of the NESCAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships was an exciting one with four records set and six different schools claiming a NESCAC title in the nine events, led by the Bates Bobcats claiming four conference crowns (400 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 200 freestyle relay).
 
Following the second day of competition, Tufts holds a 10.5-point lead (685 points) over Williams (674.5 points). Amherst (496 points), Bates (470 points), and Conn. College (415 points) round out the top five teams in the standings.
 
Saturday’s schedule features swimming prelims at 10 a.m., diving trials at 1 p.m., and the finals are set to start at 5:45 p.m. with the Senior Ceremony.

200 Freestyle Relay
The Bates Bobcats won the NESCAC title in the 200 freestyle relay for the second straight season, marking the first time Bates has won the event at the championship meet in back-to-back years. The relay of John Weigel, Max Cory, Benjamin Wolking, and Marrich Somridhivej set a NESCAC Record, NESCAC Meet Record, and Colby Pool Record with a time of 1:19.47. Bowdoin finished second (1:19.59), and Tufts followed in third place (1:19.62).
 
50 Breaststroke
In the second event of the night Marrich Somridhivej picked up his second win, becoming the first Bates swimmer to win the NESCAC title in the 50 breaststroke, posting a time of 24.04. In the morning prelims, Somridhivej set a NESCAC Record, NESCAC Meet Record, and Colby Pool Record while also recording the top time among Division III swimmers with a time of 23.87. Michael Grover of Williams finished second (24.58), and Fyn Nadel was third (24.67).
 
50 Butterfly
Bowdoin’s Jack Tran became the first Polar Bear to win the 50 butterfly in back-to-back championships. Tran, the top finisher in the morning prelims, touched up in a time of 21.47. He is the fourth Bowdoin swimmer to win a NESCAC title in the event. Max Gerke of Tufts placed second (21.66), and Amherst’s Cameron Aryanpour finished third (21.78).
 
500 Freestyle Relay
Ryan Nunez earned a win for the Williams Ephs. The junior set a Colby Pool Record with a time of 4:24.25 to win the NESCAC title in the 500 freestyle for the second consecutive year. Nunez’s victory marks the 14th time an Eph has claimed the conference title in the event. Fellow Eph Nye Hanan finished second with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:26.78. Tufts’ Ron Lyubman also achieved an NCAA B-cut with a time of 4:28.26 to place third.
 
50 Backstroke
Brandon Xiong claimed first in the 50 backstroke with a time of 22.01. Xiong is the first Colby swimmer to win the conference crown in the event since Jabez Dewey in 2007 and just the second Mule in team history. The Tufts duo of Nicholas Ogawa (22.93) and Spencer Thompson (22.98) finished 2-3, respectively.
 
200 IM
Conn. College’s Carrick Shea won the 200 IM with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:47.17. Shea’s victory snapped a streak of a Williams swimmer winning the title over the last five championships. Shea is the first Camel to win the NESCAC title in the event in team history. Owen Vale of Amherst finished second (1:47.84), and Aidan Lee of Williams placed third (1:48.98).
 
50 Freestyle
After setting a NESCAC Meet and Colby Pool Record in the morning prelims, Max Cory captured his second straight NESCAC title in the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.61. Cory is just one of two Bates swimmers to have won a conference title in the event (Theodore Pender, 2016). Hamilton’s Nathaniel Taft placed second (19.86), and Samule Brozek of Williams was third (20.01).
 
1-Meter Diving
Tufts junior Jay Wilkinson scored 522.70 points, a Colby Pool Record, to win the 1-meter diving competition for the second time in his career (2024). The Williams duo of Calder Biondi (511.0 points) and Haochen Liu (491.95) finished 2-3.
 
400 Medley Relay
The Bobcats closed out the second day winning their fourth event with an impressive performance in the 400 medley relay. The foursome of Tim Johnson, Marrich Somridhivej, Nate Oppenheim, and Max Cory lowered their NESCAC Record and reset the NESCAC Meet and Colby Pool Records with a time of 3:09.84. The Bates relay is the first in program history to win the event. The Williams squad finished second (3:13.62) and Amherst placed third (3:15.80).
