Former Bantam McGrath Drafted and Former Mule O'Brien Signs with MLB Team

Former Trinity College baseball player Cooper McGrath was an 18th-round selection of the San Francisco Giants in the 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft, while former Colby standout Brady O'Brien also signed with the Seattle Mariners as an undrafted free agent.

McGrath, who is the ninth former Bantam to be drafted into the MLB and the 44th player from the NESCAC, was a member of the Bantams pitching staff for his junior and senior campaigns from 2022-23. As a junior, McGrath led the Trinity rotation with six wins and a team-high 42 strikeouts in 31.2 innings of work, while limiting opponents to a .252 batting average. During his senior season, McGrath transitioned to a relief role, posting a 3.38 earned run average in eight innings pitched with two saves. After transferring to Northeastern as a graduate student, McGrath logged 28 appearances out of the bullpen with a 4-0 record and one save, along with a 2.20 ERA and a .220 opponent batting average.

After playing second base during his first year at Colby, O’Brien moved to third for his sophomore season and became a fixture, leading the Mules to unprecedented success. During his senior year, when Colby finished 29-12 and earned its first-ever national ranking and was an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament, he batted .336 with an on-base percentage of .459. Following graduation from Colby, O'Brien transferred to the University of Richmond for his fifth year of eligibility (COVID year). In his lone season with the Spiders, O'Brien ranked ninth in the country with a .777 slugging percentage and 11th in the nation in both home runs (20) and RBIs (72).
