Six NESCAC Men's Soccer Teams Advance in NCAA Tournament

NESCAC men's soccer teams went 6-1 in opening round games of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, November 15. Bowdoin, Conn. College, Middlebury, Tufts, Wesleyan and Williams all advanced and will play second round matches on Sunday, November 16.

Bowdoin def. Lyon, 7-2 | Box Score
Bowdoin scored six minutes into the game and held a 4-0 lead in the 27th minute en route to a 7-2 win over Lyon College from Arkansas in an NCAA First Round match at Pickard Field. Adam Prince netted a hat trick, the first ever by a Polar Bear in NCAA Tournament play, and Alden Mehta handed out a career-high three assists to pace the Polar Bears. Bowdoin held a 28-5 advantage in shots. Gabriel Rangel made eight stops for Lyon while Alex Ainsworth and Oliver King totaled one save for the Polar Bears.

Conn. College def. Univ. of Saint Joseph (CT), 6-0 | Box Score
Max Haberman scored back-to-back goals and led five Camels in the scoring column in Conn. College’s 6-0 victory over the University of Saint Joseph in an NCAA Tournament First Round match. Kevin Hwong gave Conn. College a 1-0 lead three seconds before the end of the first half. Haberman opened the scoring in the second stanza with goals in the 50th and 61st minutes. The Camels added two goals 26 seconds apart with 18 minutes remaining and closed out the scoring in the 85th minute. The Camels outshot the Blue Jays 39-7. Will Slayton made nine stops for Saint Joseph while TJ Krongard and Connor Smith combined for three stops for Conn. College.

Middlebury def. SUNY Geneseo, 2-1 | Box Score
Middlebury scored a pair of second-half goals four minutes apart and held off a late charge by SUNY Geneseo to earn a 2-1 win in its first game of the NCAA Tournament. After a scoreless first half, Pablo Gonzalez scored in the 66th minute to get the Panthers on the scoreboard. Teammate Will Sawin’s goal in the 70th minute pushed Middlebury’s lead to 2-0. SUNY Geneseo converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute to slice the lead in half, but the Panthers were able to hold off the Knights the rest of the way. Joey Waterman made one stop to pick up the win in the Middlebury net.

Tufts def. Penn State Harrisburg, 5-0 | Box Score
Bijan Akhtarzandi-Das scored two first-half goals to lead Tufts to a 5-0 win over Penn State Harrisburg in the Jumbos’ opening game of the NCAA Tournament. Akhtazandi-Das was one of four goal scorers for Tufts. The Jumbos outshot Penn State Harrisburg 23-7 in the match. Erik Rodriguez was credited with six saves for the Lions while Nikola Antic and Sammy Kao combined for two stops for the Jumbos in the shutout.

Wesleyan def. Lehman, 8-1 | Box Score
Will Martin scored twice and was one of seven different Cardinals to net a goal in Weselyan's 8-1 win over Lehman at Jackson Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals led 4-0 after the first 29 minutes of action and added four more markers in the second stanza. Wesleyan held an 18-9 advantage in shots. Lehman goalkeepers combined for six saves while Josh Nadison and Mathis Blanc totaled one stop in the Wesleyan net.

Williams def. La Roche, 4-0 | Box Score
Alex Bethencourt netted a hat trick in the first 14 minutes of the game and David Armini added a goal in the 42nd minute to lead Williams to a 4-0 win over La Roche in a match played at the University of Scranton. Williams outshot La Roche, 17-8 (8-3 in shots on goal). Kai Darrell made three saves for the clean sheet for the Ephs.

Catholic def. Amherst, 1-0 (OT) | Box Score
Holden Woodings converted a penalty kick with three minutes left in the first overtime period to lift Catholic past Amherst, 1-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in a match hosted by Cortland. In a game that featured multiple weather delays, neither team was able to score in regulation. Amherst held a 14-9 edge in shorts and 12-6 advantage in corner kicks in the contest. The goalkeepers combined for five saves in the game with Owen Allegro making three for the Cardinals and Trey Sheppard recording two for the Mammoths. Amherst finishes its season with an 8-6-3 record.
