Jumbos Win Second NESCAC Women's Soccer Title in Program History

The top-seeded Tufts Jumbos won their second NESCAC Women’s Soccer Championship trophy in program history and first since 2002 with a 5-3 win in a penalty kick shootout over No. 2 Williams.

Tufts earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The field will be announced on Monday, November 10 at 11 a.m. via a selection show on NCAA.com.

Williams took a 1-0 lead 21 minutes into the game on Elizabeth Stophel’s sixth goal of the season. From a tight angle, Stophel was able to chip the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net to put the Ephs on the board.

Looking for an equalizer, Tufts stepped up its pressure and finally broke through in the 86th minute. Reese Birch’s ninth goal of the season knotted the score at 1-1.

Neither team could find the game-winner in the two overtime periods, and the game moved to penalty kicks. In the shootout, the Jumbos scored on every attempt while Gigi Edwards made a save on the Ephs’ third try, helping the Jumbos lift the championship trophy.

Tufts owned a 26-16 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Edwards finished the game with five saves, while Margaret Huelin was credited with 10 stops for the Ephs.
