NESCAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Rachel Suh – Bates – So. – M – Bellevue, Wash.
Suh’s four-point week helped Bates post a 2-0 start to the season for the first time since 2017. The sophomore dished out two assists in a 4-1 win over Husson on Tuesday. Her second helper was a perfect cross to rookie
Isabelle Bernal (San Francisco, Calif.) who used a back-heel flick to net Bernal’s second tally of the contest. On Saturday, Suh scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to give Bates a 1-0 win over Trinity in the NESCAC opener.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst - The Mammoths started the season 3-0-0, outscoring their opponents 6-0. Amherst allowed only 15 shots (7 on goal) in three games. Senior
Charlotte Huang (Arlington, Mass.) was the central catalyst in the Mammoths’ defensive effort that allowed one corner kick in the three games. Amherst earned wins over WPI (3-0), Conn. College (2-0), and Smith (1-0).
Bowdoin - Sophomore goaltender
Charlotte Iannone (East Williston, N.Y.) made 12 saves in 180 minutes of play last week, allowing just one goal (a penalty kick) for the Polar Bears.
Colby -
Samantha DeWitt (Westport, Conn.) led the Mules to a 2-0 week, including a 1-0 victory at Bowdoin, marking the second time Colby defeated the Polar Bears in the rivalry dating back to 1979. The sophomore back played all 90 minutes and anchored a stellar defense that allowed Bowdoin one shot on goal. DeWitt’s game-winner came in the first half when she converted a penalty kick. In Colby’s opening 9-0 victory against Saint Joseph's (ME) on Tuesday, Colby's defensive unit did not allow a shot on goal.
Connecticut College - Junior forward
Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) started the new season strong, notching five points on two goals and one assist as Conn. College began the year 1-1. In a season-opening win on Tuesday over the University of Saint Joseph, Gazo’s goal in the 13th minute opened the scoring and she added an assist four minutes later, as the Camels extended the lead to 2-0. Early in the second half, Gazo recorded her second goal of the game, to make it 5-0.
Hamilton – Junior
Nieve Tonna (Huntington, N.Y.) made eight saves in a 0-0 tie at No. 21 Williams and added eight more stops in a 1-0 setback at Middlebury. Tonna has six career shutouts.
Middlebury – Senior
Sophia Cole (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) netted the game-winner in Middlebury’s 1-0 NESCAC opening win against Hamilton. The Panther found the back of the net in the 38th minute, volleying a corner kick into the net for her fifth career marker.
Tufts - Junior
Elsi Aires (Westborough, Mass.), the NESCAC leader in goals last season with 15, picked up where she left off by scoring goals in both of Tufts' opening games last week in a 4-1 win over Emerson and a 2-1 loss at Williams in the conference opener.
Wesleyan – Senior
Katie O'Connell (North Kingstown, R.I.) was involved in four of the Cardinals' seven goals in Saturday's 7-0 win at home over Mount St. Vincent. She totaled one goal and three assists, setting a Wesleyan women's soccer single-game assist record.
Williams – Junior
Ansley Burns (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored once and added an assist on the game-winning goal with 4:12 left in regulation to lift No. 21 Williams to a 2-1 win over No. 4 Tufts on Saturday. Williams went 1-1-1 in the opening week with a 0-0 tie versus Hamilton and a 1-0 loss to Springfield.
