LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College has named Jonny Macadam the ninth head coach in the 46-year history of its women's soccer program, Director of Athletics Stacey Bunting announced following a national search.
Macadam arrives in Lewiston after serving as first assistant coach at NCAA Division I Fordham University, where he played a key role in the program's rise within the Atlantic 10 Conference. During his tenure, Fordham advanced to the A-10 semifinals in 2025—its first appearance since 2015—after reaching the quarterfinals in 2024. The Rams also produced two A-10 Rookies of the Year, multiple all-conference selections, and saw the coaching staff recognized as the Atlantic 10 Coaching Staff of the Year in 2024.
"We are excited to welcome Jonny to Bates," said Bunting. "He is a relationship-driven leader with a clear vision for program development and a track record of recruiting and developing student-athletes at a high level. His experience across multiple NCAA divisions, combined with his commitment to the full student-athlete experience, makes him an outstanding fit for Bates and the NESCAC."
Bunting also expressed appreciation to the members of the search committee for their time, care, and perspective throughout the process.
At Fordham, Macadam was instrumental in a program turnaround that saw the team rise from last place in the preseason poll to a top-three seed in the conference, driven by improvements in recruiting, daily standards, and overall culture. Recruiting has been a central focus throughout his career, with experience identifying and developing talent both domestically and internationally while emphasizing long-term fit within an institution's academic and community values.
Prior to Fordham, Macadam spent six seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Bridgeport, where he was part of the 2018 NCAA Division II National Championship staff and helped guide the program to multiple conference and regional titles. He has also held roles at Fairfield University and within the Connecticut Football Club, where he serves as technical director and head coach, overseeing player development pathways and college placement.
"I'm incredibly honored to join Bates College and lead this program," Macadam said. I especially want to thank Stacey, (Deputy Director of Athletics) Will Rothermel, and the entire hiring committee for their trust and belief in my vision. Bates has a proud tradition of excellence both academically and athletically. I'm excited to build on that by competing at the highest level while developing strong, confident young players."
A native of Scotland, Macadam brings a diverse background in both coaching and playing. He signed his first professional contract at age 17 with Livingston FC (Scotland) and went on to earn NAIA Second Team All-America honors at Grand View University (Iowa), where he was also named Midwest Collegiate Conference Player of the Year in 2013.
Macadam holds an MBA from the University of Bridgeport, along with a master's degree in global media and communications and a bachelor's degree in health promotion, fitness, and wellness.
He will begin his role at Bates on May 18, leading the program into the 2026 fall campaign.
