NESCAC Player of the Week
Malcolm Whitfield – Tufts – So. – C – Dedham, Mass.
Whitfield had a strong conference weekend for the Jumbos, starting all three games in a sweep of Trinity to help Tufts clinch a playoff spot. Whitfield was 5-for-9 (.556) with three runs scored, two homers, and three RBI. The sophomore also walked once and was successful on all four of his stolen base attempts. Whitfield was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Friday evening and then was 2-for-3 with a homer and two stolen bases in Game 2 on Saturday.
NESCAC Pitcher of the Week
Justin Lessing – Middlebury – P – Westport, Conn.
Lessing
tallied his fourth straight win on the mound for the Panthers, throwing a one-hit gem in a seven-inning 2-1 win in the opener against Amherst on Saturday. The outing marked Lessing’s second consecutive complete game, as he struck out seven batters and allowed just one infield single. Lessing leads the NESCAC with a 1.07 ERA, and is the only hurler to allow single-digit runs (5) this season.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Jack Dove (Norwalk, Conn.) batted .400 (8 for 20), including a pair of three-hit performances in non-conference action versus Springfield and MIT, in a 2-3 week for the Mammoths. The senior scored four runs and drove in four home for more runners. Sophomore
Tristan Kim (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) allowed one run over 6 2.3 innings of work while scattering seven hits, walking one batter, and striking out two others as the Mammoths beat Middlebury, 4-2, in the series opener.
Bates –
Keagan Ryan (Salem, N.H.) smacked a home run and ran wild on the bases, but it wasn't enough as Bates left nine runners on base and struck out 13 times as a team in a 4-2 loss to Wesleyan in game two of Sunday's doubleheader. Ryan's third home run of the season cut the Wesleyan lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth. With Bates down 4-1, Ryan got hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the eighth and promptly stole second. Then he stole third and scored when the throw got away, making the score 4-2.
Teddie Nelson (Marshfield, Mass.) entered Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader out of the bullpen in the top of the fourth and turned in an outstanding performance, shutting out Wesleyan with four innings of one-hit ball. The senior struck out three batters along the way in one of the best performances of the right-hander’s collegiate career.
Bowdoin – Sophomore
Luca McKerley Coronado (Berkeley, Calif.) tossed seven innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run as the Polar Bears defeated Colby 2-1 on Saturday at Pickard Field.
Colby –
Cole Palmeri (Hamilton, N.J.) led Colby to a series win against Bowdoin last weekend. In two victories against the Polar Bears, the senior collected two doubles and two home runs, extending his league-leading tallies in both categories. Palmeri’s round-trippers came in his opening at-bat each game to spot the Mules early leads. In four games on the week Palmeri scored six runs while driving in six more runners.
Matthew Scibilio (Scituate, Mass.) picked up two saves against the Polar Bears last weekend. In the series opener on Friday, the lefty took the mound in the ninth inning to thwart a Polar Bear rally, and in Game 2 on Saturday, Scibilio returned to the bump to throw two innings and secure the series victory. The senior lowered his ERA on the season to 1.10.
Hamilton –
Jack Griffin (Riverside, Conn.) posted a .545 (6-for-11) batting average in a three-game sweep at Williams. Griffin has hit safely in six straight games. The senior opened the series by going 3-for-4 with two walks, three runs batted in, and a stolen base in a 14-3 win. The outfielder was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in a 6-1 victory in Saturday's opener. Griffin singled, doubled, was hit by a pitch, and scored a run in an 8-2 triumph in the series finale. Jack Eshleman (Collegeville, Pa.) allowed one run on four hits in seven innings of a 6-1 win against Williams. Eshleman walked two and struck out nine in the complete game effort. The junior improved to 4-0, and the Continentals are 7-1 this year in games in which Eshleman pitches.
Middlebury – Junior
Kyle McCausland (Wellesley, Mass.) tallied a two-run round-tripper on Saturday morning, helping Middlebury edge Amherst, 2-1. Over the three-game series, the Panther tallied five base knocks, three runs, and four RBI to help Middlebury take the series 2-1.
Trinity –
William Frain (South Hamilton, Mass.) registered a .461 batting average in a four-game week, going 2-for-3 from the plate against Wesleyan, and 4-for-10 during the Tufts series. Frain collected three RBI including a homerun early against the Cardinals. In the field, the senior registered 27 putouts with 1 assist. Senior
Michael Aceto (Hamden, Conn.) tossed a season-high 7.2 innings in Game 3 against the Jumbos, throwing 108 pitches, with five strikeouts and seven hits.
Tufts –In his first start of the season,
Jacob Lapp (Andover, Mass.) was stellar as he allowed just one earned run and six hits over 6.1 innings in a 2-1 win over Trinity in the third game of a three-game sweep last weekend. Lapp struck out two and walked two in the game en route to the win.
Wesleyan – Sophomore
Connor Sullivan (Stamford, Conn.) homered in all three games in a 3-0 week for Wesleyan, totaling seven RBI in the process. The catcher hit a two-run shot in a 10-6 win over Trinity on Tuesday before belting a three-run shot in Game 1 and a two-run homer in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader sweep of Bates. Senior
Patrick Murphy (Gardner, N.Y.) threw four shutout innings in a 4-2 win at Bates on Sunday, allowing just two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Williams –
Henry Juan (Big Flats, N.Y.) went 9-of-20 batting in five games last week for the Ephs, to go along with five RBI, three doubles, and two runs scored. The junior finished 3-for- 5 in the box, with three RBI, two doubles, and one run, in a 16-8 win at MCLA on Tuesday. Against visiting RPI on Wednesday, Juan went 3-for-5, with one RBI, and one run. Jake Jeffries (Charlotte, N.C.) earned his second win of the season, pitching the final six innings and only giving up three earned runs during a 16-8 win at MCLA on Tuesday.
