NESCAC Inclusion Spotlight: Bates' Bobcats & Belonging

On Wednesdays throughout the academic year the NESCAC will highlight the efforts and events the athletic departments across the conference are doing to support and foster inclusion on their respective campuses.

Last May, the Bates Athletics Equity and Inclusion Council organized the Bobcats & Belonging event with help from the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Center for Belonging and Community, Purposeful Work, and the Alumni Engagement Office.

A diverse group of alumni panelists returned to campus to discuss their Bates experience, their lives beyond Bates, and how they think about the intersectionality between their professional lives and the importance of promoting inclusivity and belonging.

Bates student-athletes Alexandra Long (women's basketball) and Denzel Evans (men's lacrosse), moderated a conversation between current student-athletes and Bates alumni panelists regarding the intersectionality between professional work and DEIB. After the panel discussion, the 60 students and 20 coaches, administrators, and campus partners were invited to a community dinner and roundtable discussion. The goal is to make this an annual event on the Bates campus.

Speakers at the event included:
Chuck James '78
Lauryn Boucree '21
Marshall Hatch, Jr. '10
Carolyn King-Robitaille '07
