HADLEY, Mass. - The 2023 NESCAC Men's Tennis awards were announced on Thursday. Tristan Bradley of Bowdoin was the recipient of the NESCAC Player of the Year honor, while Jason Shuler of Williams was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, and fellow Eph Chase Cohen was named the Clarence Chaffee Sportsmanship Award winner. Middlebury head coach Andrew Thomson was voted as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers.
Bradley, an All-NESCAC First Team Singles and Second Team Doubles honoree is the fourth Bowdoin player to earn the Player of the Year accolade and the first since the 2019 season. The junior is 24-4 at the No. 1 spot for the Polar Bears and is 13-9 at the No. 1 doubles position with playing partner Reid Staples. Bradley won 14 consecutive singles matches prior to the NESCAC Championship where the Polar Bears finished as the NESCAC Runners-Up. Bowdoin was an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament and will play in a regional at Williams May 5-7.
Shuler, an All-NESCAC Second Team Singles and Doubles selection is the third consecutive Eph to be named NESCAC Rookie of the Year, joining current teammates Chase Cohen and Matt Kandel. Shuler stands at 13-6 playing at the No. 2/3 position on the Ephs' ladder and has won seven straight matches. Shuler is 22-6 on the doubles court this season. Williams reached the semifinals of the NESCAC Championship and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Ephs will host a regional on May 5-7.
Cohen is the fifth Eph to earn the Clarence Chaffee Sportsmanship Award. The honor is given annually to the individual who displayed a high standard of tennis coupled with the highest levels of sportsmanship. Cohen, an All-NESCAC First Team Singles and Doubles honoree has won 10 matches at the No. 1 spot for the Ephs in singles and 15 matches at No. 1 doubles this season.
Thomson is the NESCAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career in his fourth season at the helm of the Middlebury program. Thomson has led the Panthers to back-to-back NESCAC titles and a 66-12 record. Middlebury earned the NESCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament following its third straight conference championship and 11th overall. Thomson is the third Middlebury coach to win the award.
