NESCAC Boasts Four CSC Academic All-Americans in Men's Tennis

The College Sports Communicators (CSC) organization recently announced the 2025-26 Academic All-Americans for men's tennis. Four NESCAC student-athletes were selected for the three teams. Middlebury's Julian Wu was a First Team selection, while the Tufts duo of Javier Gonzalez and Sacha Maes, along with Williams' Simon Volkema, were Third Team selections. The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

Wu, a two-time CSC Academic All-District honoree, recently earned his degree in economics from Middlebury. He tallied a team-best 21 victories (21-7) in singles action, including a 12-4 record in dual matches. The graduate secured his third All-NESCAC singles honor and landed on the first team for the second time. Wu competed at the NCAA Individual Championships, defeating his round-of-32 opponent in straight sets before falling to the eventual champion. Wu helped guide the Panthers to a 14-5 record and a 7-3 mark in NESCAC action.

Over his career, Wu posted an 82-25 record and is third in program history for the most singles victories in the last 12 seasons. He concluded the season ranked 10th on the final ITA national list. Wu tallied an 18-10 record in doubles and had 10 victories during the spring slate. Off the court, the Panther has secured three NESCAC All-Academic selections and a trio of ITA Scholar Athlete awards. Wu was also recognized as a Middlebury College Scholar and secured a spot on the Dean's List

Gonzalez and Maes both graduated from Tufts with Magna Cum Laude honors on May 17, 2026. Gonzalez earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, finishing with a 3.78 grade point average. Maes achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations and community health with a 3.76 GPA. Both were key contributors to the Tufts team, which finished with a 25-3 record, won the program's first NESCAC title since 1989, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament semifinals.

A NESCAC All-Conference first-team honoree in singles for 2026, Gonzalez played at No. 1 for the Jumbos and is ranked 16th nationally and sixth regionally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as of  May 13. He was a perfect 6-0 in NESCAC dual meets and finished the season 9-5 in singles overall. Gonzalez was selected to play in the NCAA Singles Tournament, but had to withdraw due to an injury. He also played doubles in all three positions for the Jumbos, including going 14-0 with sophomore teammate Stavros Mastrojamvrakis.

Gonzalez was a 2025 NCAA Doubles finalist and an NCAA singles semifinalist who has earned ITA All-American honors for 2025 singles, 2025 doubles, and 2024 singles. A No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles player on the Tufts team that advanced to the NCAA Semifinals in 2025, Gonzalez was also a 2025 CSC Academic All-District® Team member as well as a three-time NESCAC All-Academic Team honoree.

Maes and senior partner Alex Ganchev were NESCAC All-Conference first-team in doubles this season, where they are ranked #2 in the nation by the ITA as of May 13. They were also selected to play in the NCAA Doubles Tournament. In addition to helping Tufts earn a strong 15-5 record in #1 doubles action this season, Maes also started at third, fourth and fifth singles for the Jumbos and notched an impressive 15-2 record.

An ITA All-American in doubles for the 2025 season, Maes and Ganchev won the ITA Cup doubles fall national championship in 2024. Maes played No. 2 doubles on the 2025 Tufts team that advanced to the NCAA Semifinals, and he was an ITA Cup doubles quarterfinalist in 2023. While on a Pre-Med Track academically, Maes was a three-time NESCAC All-Academic Team member.

A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Volkema was a double major in art and economics. Playing at No. 1 singles for the Ephs with a 12-12 mark, Volkema was selected to the All-NESCAC First Team and won 50 singles matches in his career, in addition to 56 doubles victories. He, along with senior Daniel Chen, earned All-NESCAC First Team Doubles honors, going 18-10  with a 12-5 mark in dual matches. The duo also competed in the NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships and finished the year as the eighth-ranked doubles team in Division III. Two years ago, Volkema helped Williams advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship with a straight-set win and won both of his doubles matches at the 2023 NCAA Championship, helping the Ephs reach the quarterfinals. Williams finished the 2025-26 season 24th in the national rankings with an 11-6 record.

The NESCAC boasts over 400 CSC Academic All-Americans, including 26 in men's tennis, in conference history.
