NESCAC Baseball Awards Unveiled

HADLEY, Mass. – Middlebury's Kyle McCausland and Alex Price were voted as the NESCAC Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively by the conference coaches. Tufts junior Ozzie Fleisher was named Defensive Player of the Year and Wesleyan's Ernie Little was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Tufts head coach Paul Svagdis was voted as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers.

McCausland leads the NESCAC in batting average (.438), slugging percentage (.767), and OPS (1.240). McCausland has 10 home runs and 14 doubles among his conference-high 64 hits this season. He has driven in 57 runs and scored 48 to lead the NESCAC in both categories. McCausland is the second straight Panther to be named NESCAC Player of the Year and the third overall.

Price led the conference with 63.0 innings pitched and 73 strikeouts. The senior carries a 4.00 ERA and is 5-0 in 12 appearances, which includes two complete games and one shutout. The 2023 season marks the second consecutive year a Panther has been selected as NESCAC Pitcher of the Year. Price is the third Middlebury pitcher to garner the award since 2018. Middlebury was an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament and travels to Bridgewater State for a regional.

Fleischer, a shortstop, ranks third in the conference in assists (100), turning 11 double plays, and has only four errors in 161 changes for a .975 fielding percentage. Fleischer is third among the Jumbos in hitting with a .269 average and has scored 27 runs go with 18 RBI. Fleischer is the fourth Tufts player to earn the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year award and the first since 2015.

Little is the first Wesleyan player to be selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. The first year started 31 of 33 games and led the Cardinals with a .368 batting average, 46 hits, and 30 runs scored. Little also went 24-for-27 in stolen bases and drove in 19 runs.

Svagdis earns the NESCAC Coach of the Year honor in his second season at the helm at his alma mater. Svagdis led the Jumbos to an 11-1 conference record and their seventh NESCAC title and first since 2019. The Jumbos were an automatic selection to the NCAA Tournament after claiming the NESCAC title and enter NCAA Regional play with a 31-9 mark. Svagdis is the second Tufts coach to be named NESCAC Coach of the Year.
