HADLEY, Mass. – Trinity’s Jana Safy is the 2023 NESCAC Women’s Squash Player of the Year as voted by the coaches. Safy is the first sophomore since 2014 to earn the honor. The 2023 season marks the fourth consecutive year a Bantam has been named NESCAC Player of the Year and Safy is the 13th Bantam overall to garner the honor.
Playing at the top of the ladder for Trinity, Safy won her match in the final of the NESCAC Championship to help the Bantams claim their 16th straight conference title. Safy posted a record of 10-3 this season as Trinity completed a perfect regular season with a 16-0 record. Safy, who was named to the All-NESCAC First Team for the second year in a row, is 19-8 overall in her Trinity career.
Hannah Chukwu was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year and is the 10th Trinity player to garner the honor in the history of the NESCAC awards which dates back to 2008. Chukwu played at both the No. 3 and No. 4 spots on the Trinity ladder and finished her rookie season with an 11-1 mark. Chukwu also earned All-NESCAC Second Team honors.
Trinity head coach Wendy Bartlett was voted as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by her peers. She led the Bantams to their 16th NESCAC title and a 16-0 record this season. Bartlett, who is in her 39th season at the helm of the Bantams, is the NESCAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in her career.
The 2023 season marks the second time Trinity has swept the major awards in the history of the honors. The Bantams also swept the conference awards in 2013.
