HADLEY, Mass. – Wesleyan sophomore Sophia Lindus repeats as the NESCAC Player of the Year and is the third player since 2000 to win the award in back-to-back years and first since Tori Jasuta of Williams in 2013 and 2014. Teammate Bianca Ortiz was selected as the NESCAC Defenisve Player of the Year while Skye LaMendola of Bowdoin was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. The Wesleyan coaching staff was voted as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year by the league's coaches.
Lindus, who earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team for the second year in a row, is the fourth Cardinal to garner Player of the Year honors. The outside hitter leads the NESCAC in kills per set (4.17) and is hitting .306 on the season while totaling 292 kills, 196 digs, 23 blocks, and 17 service aces. Lindus helped Wesleyan earn the top seed in the NESCAC Championship, host the tournament for the second time in program history, and win the NESCAC title for the second time in program history. The Cardinals earned the NESCACs automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and are their sixth consecutive appearance.
Ortiz is the third Cardinal in four years to be selected as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year. The senior, who was also named to the All-NESCAC First Team, is averaging 6.00 digs per set to lead the conference and enters the NCAA Tournament 20 digs shy of 500 for the season. Ortiz also leads Wesleyan with 28 service aces this season.
LaMendola, an All-NESCAC First Team selection, is the third Polar Bear since 2017 to be named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. The newcomer ranked second in the NESCAC in kills per set (4.08) and hit .233 with 23 blocks and 17 aces. LaMendola also ranked third on the team in digs per set at 2.73 this season. Bowdoin made a strong run in the NESCAC Tournament to reach the semifinals. The No. 10 seeded Polar Bears defeated No. 7 Hamilton in the first round then upset No. 2 Colby in the quarterfinals to become the lowest seed to advance to the semifinals in tournament history.
The Wesleyan coaching staff was recognized by their peers for the first time with the Coaching Staff of the Year award. Led by ninth-year head coach Ben Somera, the Cardinals went unbeaten in conference play (10-0) and grabbed the No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Championship for the third year in a row. Wesleyan finished the regular season with a 19-1 record, the best start in program history, and will play in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season.
