HADLEY, Mass. – The NESCAC announced its year-end awards for men's lacrosse. Bowdoin took home three of the four major individual awards. As voted by the NESCAC coaches, junior attack Casey Ryan was selected as the Player of the Year, while teammate Nico Schermer was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Colby newcomer Eli Chilicki was voted as the Rookie of the Year, and the Bowdoin staff was selected as the Coaching Staff of the Year by its peers.
Ryan leads the NESCAC and Bowdoin in scoring (90 points), goals (52), and assists (38) through 15 games. As an attack, Ryan is averaging 5.93 points and 3.47 goals per game for the Polar Bears. Ryan is the fourth player from Bowdoin to be named the NESCAC Player of the Year and the third since 2022. The top-seeded Polar Bears will host the NESCAC Semifinals and Championship Game on May 2-3 at Whittier Field.
Schermer is the second consecutive Bowdoin player to garner the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year honor, which was created in 2024. Schermer has tallied nine points on five goals and four assists. The junior has collected 55 ground balls and recorded 17 caused turnovers. Schermer has contributed to a Bowdoin defense that has allowed a league-low 125 goals. The top-seeded Polar Bears will face No. 6 Hamilton in the NESCAC Semifinals.
Chilicki is the fourth Colby Mule to be voted as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year and the first since 2014. The newcomer, who started all 13 games he played, led Colby and ranked among the NESCAC leaders in points (42) and goals (31) while also handing out 11 assists. Chilicki also registered 31 ground balls.
The Bowdoin staff, led by Bill Mason with assistant coaches Donal Mullane, Zach Goorno, Thomas McCabe, and Ethan Barnard, was recognized as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the second straight season. The 2026 campaign marks the third time since Mason’s arrival at Bowdoin that the staff has been honored, and it is the fifth time a Polar Bear coaching staff has been recognized with the award. Bowdoin posted an unbeaten regular season in the NESCAC (10-0) to earn the top seed in the conference tournament. Bowdoin’s 14-0 record marked just the second time in team history that the program went unbeaten during the regular season. The Polar Bears will host the remaining rounds of the NESCAC Tournament on May 2-3 at Whittier Field.
