Tufts Announces Stephen Doyle as Head Men’s Golf Coach

MEDFORD, Mass. – Tufts University Interim Director of Athletics Alexis Mastronardi announced the hiring of Stephen Doyle as the head coach of the Jumbo men's golf squad.

"We are thrilled to welcome Stephen Doyle to Tufts and to the Jumbo family," said Mastronardi. "With over 20 years of experience coaching, instructing, and teaching, Stephen is student-focused and committed to developing student-athletes both on and off the golf course. He impressed the search committee not only with his personality and character, but also with his passion and excitement for mentoring student-athletes and desire to lead a Division III golf program."

"I'm incredibly honored and grateful to be named the head golf coach at Tufts University," said Doyle. "Tufts has a proud academic and athletic tradition, and I am excited to lead a program that reflects those values. It is a privilege to join a university that believes in the growth of its student-athletes both on and off the course."

Doyle most recently spent the last four years as the Professional Golf Association (PGA) instructor of Doyle Golf in Littleton, Massachusetts. He oversaw tailoring golf lessons utilizing Trackman launch analysis as well as using video for enhanced instruction.

Prior to that, he was the head golf professional at Vesper Country Club in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, from 2013 to 2021. While at Vesper, he directed all golf operations, including supervising a staff of more than 15 golf professionals, assistants, and staff. He also oversaw all aspects of operations, budget, programming, grounds, and training.

In addition, Doyle was the first assistant golf professional at The Country Club, the renowned club known for hosting multiple U.S. Opens from 2005-2013. While at TCC, he coordinated daily operations, tournaments, merchandising, as well as supervising Class A professionals and PGM interns.

Doyle holds a Class A membership with the PGA, while also being certified as a club fitting expert by Titleist. Doyle will take over for George Pendergast, who will be retiring from his position in December of this upcoming season.

"I am grateful that our athletics department will have Coach Pendergast on staff throughout the fall semester to help during this time of transition, said Mastronardi. "Coach Pendergast built a solid foundation at Tufts, which saw the Jumbos experience unprecedented success both at the conference and national levels. I am confident that with Stephen's leadership and direction the men's golf program will build from and expand upon that success. I look forward to supporting Stephen and the Jumbos as they tee off this fall."

"My immediate goals are to create a strong team culture, prioritize player development, and establish clear expectations for performance and accountability," said Doyle. "I want to set a foundation that supports competitive success in the NESCAC, while also ensuring our athletes are growing as students and leaders. Short term, it is about building trust and setting the tone for long-term success."

Doyle will start at Tufts July 28.
