NESCAC Releases Women's Track & Field Awards

HADLEY, Mass. – Conn. College junior Grace McDonough is the NESCAC’s Sabasteanski Award winner as the Most Outstanding Performer. Tufts newcomer Elysse Cumberland was named the Most Outstanding Rookie and the Williams staff was selected as the Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.

McDonough is the second Camel to earn the Sabasteanski Award and the second in four years (Malissa Lindsey, 2022). She established new NESCAC Championship meet records in the 1500 and 5000 meter races en route to winning both events. The junior defended her title in the 1500-meter race and became the first athlete to win back-to-back NESCAC titles in the event since 2016-2017. McDonough posted a time of 4:25.47, which currently ranks first in NCAA Divisoin III, and became the first Camel runner to win a title in the 1500 meters. The middle-distance runner added a second NESCAC title with a record breaking performance in the 5000 meters. Her winning time of 16:41.56 was 10 seconds faster than the record that had stood since 2007. McDonough became the second Conn. College runner to win the 5000-meters at the NESCAC Championship meet and first since 2003. Both of her times were season-bests and also broke the Conn. College school records in the respective events.

Cumberland is the fifth Jumbo to be named NESCAC Most Outstanding Rookie after winning the NESCAC title in the long jump and triple jump, while also anchoring the third-place 4x100 relay. Cumberland became the seventh Tufts athlete to win the long jump with a mark of 5.76 meters and was two centimeters shy of breaking the NESCAC record in the event. Cumberland also captured the NESCAC title in the triple jump with a mark of 11.98 meters and is the second consecutive Jumbo and sixth overall to win the triple jump. The newcomer alro ran the anchor leg of Tufts' 4x100 relay team that finished third with a school-record time of 47.38 to earn her third All-NESCAC honor.

The Williams staff of head coach Nate Hoey and assistant coaches Ethan Barron, Mike Blair, Barb Grossov, Dusty Lopez, Stephanie Mauer were voted as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers. The staff guided the Ephs to their 27th NESCAC Women's Track & Field title and their first since 2019.
