NESCAC Player of the Week
Kate Olenik – Colby – So. – G – Medfield, Mass.
Olenik’s career-high 32 points in a 65-60 win against Amherst helped the Mules snap a 26-game losing streak to the Mammoths. Olenik’s 20 second-half points helped Colby hold a slight lead as the sophomore shot 7-of-8 in the second stanza, including a pair of 3-pointers. The point guard’s 12 points, nine in the second stanza, and seven defensive rebounds in Saturday's come-from-behind win against Hamilton helped the Mules erase a 12-point deficit. Olenik reached double-digits in the scoring column for the 17th consecutive game.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Kori Barach (Carlisle, Mass.) averaged 12.7 points per game last week, a 1-2 week for the Mammoths. The senior reached double-digits in all three games with 12 points in a win over New Jersey City and 13 points each in setbacks versus Colby and Bowdoin.
Bates –
Elsa Daulerio (Harpswell, Maine) dropped a career-high 28 points on 10-for-17 shooting in an 80-74 win over Williams on Friday. She grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists, blocked a shot, and recorded two steals against the Ephs. The junior followed up with her sixth double-double of the season in the Bobcats' 66-56 win over Middlebury on Sunday, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds. Daulerio also blocked three shots and held Middlebury's top post player to nine points on 4-of-12 shooting. Daulerio made 13 of her 14 free throw attempts over two games, securing Bates' first two NESCAC wins of the season.
Bowdoin –
Sydney Jones (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) led the Polar Bears to a 2-0 conference road weekend, sole possession of first place in the NESCAC, and the third 20-0 start in program history last week. At Hamilton and Amherst, Jones averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 steals while shooting 47 percent from the field. After scoring 18 points on Friday, Jones was held scoreless for the first 13 minutes at Amherst on Saturday as the Polar Bears faced their largest deficit of the season (trailing 20-12). The senior guard hit a 3-pointer and scored 15 of Bowdoin's next 22 points, including the last seven of the half, as the Polar Bears grabbed an eight-point lead at the break and never looked back. Jones ended with a season-high 25 points in the victory.
Conn. College –
Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) was a super sub off the bench last week, averaging 10.0 points in 20.5 minutes per game in NESCAC action. The junior netted a team and season-high 13 points in 19 minutes against Wesleyan and finished with seven points in 22 minutes against Trinity.
Hamilton – Junior
Taylor Lambo (Watertown, Mass.) was one rebound short of a double-double and finished with 12 points and nine boards (four offensive) in a 66-50 setback against fourth-ranked Bowdoin. Lambo posted 17 points, three assists, two blocked shots, and a career-high 18 rebounds (seven offensive) in a 65-55 loss against Colby. Junior
Althea Hill (Los Angeles, Calif.) tied a season-high with 15 points against the Mules.
Middlebury –
Calie Messina (Auburn, Mass.) led Middlebury in scoring over a pair of close losses. The Panther averaged 12.5 points per game and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. In addition to her 10 points against Bates, Messina grabbed five boards and handed out three assists. The junior is shooting 80 percent from the charity stripe and ranks third on the squad in scoring (9.7 ppg).
Trinity – Junior
Melissa Whitmore (Hanover, N.H.) powered the Bantams’ offense in a 1-1 week, averaging 15.5 points, shooting 63.2 percent from the field and 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from 3-point range, with 4.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists. In a victory over Conn College, Whitmore poured in 18 points, connecting on 7-of-9 field goals and 4-of-4 from beyond the arc, with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Whitmore added 15 points, four rebounds, a block, and a steal against Tufts.
Tufts –
Sofia Gonzalez (Glendale, Calif.) helped Tufts post its fifth straight win in NESCAC play with victories over Wesleyan and Trinity. The senior averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per contest. In Friday’s win versus Wesleyan, Gonzalez tallied 24 points and added three rebounds and five steals, shooting 10-of-15 including 4-of-9 from deep. The guard added 14 points and seven boards in a win over Trinity on Senior Day on Saturday.
Wesleyan –
Tori DaCosta (Bronx, N.Y.) averaged a double-double in two games last week for Wesleyan, with 13.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. The senior opened with 11 points and 13 rebounds against Tufts before recording 15 points and nine rebounds with three assists as the Cardinals defeated Conn. College on Saturday. DaCosta shot 52.2 percent from the floor in the two games.
Williams –
Arianna Gerig (Westport, Conn.) averaged 26.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 2.0 steals while shooting 51.3 percent from the field in a 1-1 weekend for the Ephs. The senior recorded a double-double with 26 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and one steal while shooting 11-fo-20 from the field (55.0%) in a 73-65 win at the University of Saint Joseph (CT) on Sunday. Gerig totaled 26 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block at Bates on Friday.
