NESCAC Player of the Week
Arianna Gerig – Williams – Sr. – G/F – Westport, Conn.
Gerig led Williams to a 3-0 record over the holiday break, including an upset of No. 9 Gettysburg. The senior averaged 22.7 points, including a perfect 11-for-11 effort at the charity stripe, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game. At the Cruzin Classic in Florida (Dec. 19-20), Gerig averaged 26.5 points efficiently, shooting 59.5 percent from the floor. Gerig scored 26 points to go with nine rebounds, in a 59-48 triumph over Concordia (WI). In a 58-54 win over No. 9 Gettysburg the following day, Gerig recorded a season-high 27 points with six steals, matching her season high, and was 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Gerig was two rebounds shy of a double-double (15 pts, 8 reb) in a non-conference win at Wesleyan to close out the stretch of holiday break games.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Bates –
Sarah Hughes (Rumson, N.J.) reached double figures in scoring in all three games during the holiday break. She was quiet in a 62-50 win over WPI on Dec. 19 until the fourth quarter. With Bates up by seven at 49-42, Hughes nailed a 3-pointer with 5:42 remaining to give the visitors some more breathing room and ignited a run, as Hughes scored the final 13 points of the game for Bates. The Engineers trimmed the Bates advantage to six with just over a minute left, but Hughes sealed the victory at the free throw line, making 6-of-6 over the last minute. Hughes finished the contest with a game-high 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The sophomore paced the Bobcats with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds against NCAA Division I opponent University of Maine on December 21. Hughes capped off the three-game stretch with 10 points in a 70-45 win over Wheaton (MA) on January 5. Hughes is averaging 14.5 points per game this season, tops on the team and eighth in the NESCAC.
Bowdoin – Senior
Sydney Jones (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) led the Polar Bears to three non-conference victories over the holiday break to improve to 11-0. Jones averaged 15.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals while shooting 50.0 percent (21-42 FG) from the field. Jones scored nine fourth-quarter points against Denison, finishing with 20 overall, in a comeback victory before New Year's, and totaled double-digits in each of the three wins. The guard posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in a win over New Jersey City University and nearly had a second double-double with 14 points and nine boards in a victory over Emory.
Colby – Sophomore
Kate Olenik (Medfield, Mass.) averaged 25.7 points across four contests last week, tallying 28 points against Wellesley, 29 points versus Lake Forest, and connecting for a career-high 30 against MIT. The sophomore played the full 40 minutes in three of the four games and ranks second in the NESCAC in scoring at 19.7 points per game.
Conn. College –
Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.) averaged 11.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game during the holiday break as the Camels posted a 2-1 record. The senior guard finished with 15 points, eight boards, and a career-high seven assists in a 64-54 win over Arcadia and added two blocks and two steals. Donadio contributed nine points, six rebounds, and five assists in a 90-51 victory over Mount Saint Vincent. In a road loss to Babson, the senior recorded 10 points, six caroms, and two steals.
Hamilton – Junior
Taylor Lambo (Watertown, Mass.) averaged 20.0 points and 12.5 rebounds and shot 55 percent from the floor as the Continentals went 4-0. The junior forward recorded a double-double in all four games. Lambo filled the stat sheet with 20 points, 12 boards, three assists, and two steals in an 80-70 win in double overtime against Oberlin at Otterbein's Smokey Ballenger Classic. The next day, Lambo scored 20 points and tied a season-high with 16 rebounds in a 71-43 victory against Albion. Lambo registered 17 points and 10 caroms in a 64-48 triumph against William Smith and posted 23 points and 12 rebounds in a 75-59 win against St. Lawrence. Lambo went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line and made her first career 3-pointer against the Saints.
Middlebury –
Alexa Mustafaj (Yonkers, N.Y.) averaged 25.3 points per game in a 2-2 week for Middlebury, which included a double-overtime loss. The Panther highlighted the span with a 39-point performance in a 66-49 victory over Oswego State. During the week, Mustafaj became Middlebury’s all-time career leader in made free throws, running her total to 348. Mustafaj broke the record with an 11-for-13 effort from the charity stripe in the final game of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Enfield/Naismith Classic where Mustafaj was named to the all-tournament team after a game-high 27 points. The previous program mark of 336 career free throws was set back in 2011.
Trinity – Sophomore
Olivia Vick (Chicago, Ill.) averaged 22.0 points, shooting 46.9 percent (15-32) from the floor, including 69.2 percent (9-13) from 3-point range, with 3.5 rebounds during a 1-1 week of non-conference action for the Bantams. Vick paced the Bantams offense with a game-high 23 points, shooing 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-5 from three-point range, with four rebounds during a 69-64 win over Ithaca. Vick added a team-high 21 points, connecting on 4-of-8 3-pointers, with three rebounds and a steal.
Tufts –
Sofia Gonzalez (Glendale, Calif.) began the four-game stretch with six points and seven rebounds against Ithaca and followed up with 20 points (5-10 3FG) in a 60-51 win at Springfield College to secure the Naismith Classic title. Gonzalez came out against SUNY Cobleskill and dropped an efficient 11 points in 19 minutes as the Jumbos dropped the game 58-60. Gonzalez bounced back with a 15-point/15-rebound double-double performance against Skidmore to help boost the Jumbos to a 65-54 win to end the non-conference slate.
Wesleyan -
Meghan Kirck (Orange, Conn.) led the Cardinals with a 12.7 points per game average while shooting 10-for-17 from 3-point range (58.8 percent) and shooting 51.9 percent from the floor. The first year added 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 33.2 minutes per game. Kirck started the three-game stretch with 16 points (6-9 FG, 4-5 3FG) and six rebounds against Roger Williams and followed with a career-high 17 points (5-11 3FG) against Oswego State.
