Conn. College Alum Maggie Shea Finishes 10th in Women's Skiff at Paris Olympics

MARSEILLE, France – Former Connecticut College sailing standout Maggie Shea '11 and teammate Stephanie Roble finished 10th in the women's skiff (49er FX) at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday morning at Marseille Marina.

The duo, making their second Olympics appearance, made it through the opening series to qualify for the medal race. They stuck close to the lead boat for much of the race but crossed the finish line in 10th. The Netherlands, which finished third in the medal race, claimed overall gold with the lowest cumulative point total in the 13 races.

The women's skiff involved 20 boats competing in an opening series of 12 races over the course of four days (July 28-31). Following the opening series, the top 10 qualified for the medal race on August 1, which was abandoned due to weather conditions and rescheduled for August 2.

Shea and Roble's week got off to a good start, as they stood in sixth place after the second day of racing. The U.S. finished third in Race 4 and amassed 40 points through six races, trailing only France (10), Netherlands (20), Italy (28), Germany (35) and Australia (35) at the midway point. After losing ground on Day 3, the Americans fought hard over the final three races to secure 10th place overall and their first-ever spot in the medal race.

Shea was a team captain and All-American who helped the program finish second at the ICSA National Championships during her senior year in 2011. She was also the recipient of the Tammy Brown '84 Award as the institution's top female scholar-athlete in her graduating class for her academic and athletic achievements.
