Tufts' Appleton Named CSC Academic All-American

MEDFORD, Mass. - Tufts University junior cross country and track standout Ivan Appleton was named Wednesday to 2023-24 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-American Second Team.

Appleton, who holds a 3.93 GPA in mechanical engineering, was one of the Jumbos top distance runners this year during his junior campaign. In cross country, Appleton was fifth in the NCAA East Regional and then finished as an All-American at the NCAA Championships after racing to a time of 24:42.6.

During the indoor track and field season, Appleton was the East Region's top 5000 meter runner, earning an NCAA Championships appearance in the event while earning Second Team All-American in the event. He also was ranked No. 3 in the 3000 meters in the East Region, while ranking 35th nationally.

Appleton broke the Tufts University school record in the 3000 and 5000 meter runs during the indoor season, and also earned All-NESCAC in the steeplechase in 2023 and 2022. He has been an All-Region performer in cross country in 2022 and 2023, and was the runner-up at the NESCAC Championships this past fall after running a 25:07.1. Appleton has been named as a NESCAC All-Academic honoree twice, while earning Dean's List honors each semester at Tufts. He was also picked as the 2023 NESCAC All-Sportsmanship honoree for the Tufts men's cross country team.

Appleton becomes the eighth Tufts men's cross country of track and field participant to earn Academic All-American honors, joining the list below. He is also the first since the 2017 season to pick up the award. Appleton is Tufts' 72nd all-time Academic All-American.

The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist the College Sports Communicators with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2023-24 Division III Academic All-America® program.
