HADLEY, Mass. – The NESCAC announced its 2023-24 men’s golf awards. Trinity's Benjamin Boyd was voted as the NESCAC Golfer of the Year, Joey Zheng of Bowdoin was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, and Tufts head coach George Pendergast was selected as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers.
Boyd is the seventh Trinity golfer to earn the NESCAC Golfer of the Year honor and the first since Will Rosenfield earned the accolade in 2017-18 and 2018-19. Boyd had the best scoring average in the NESCAC (72.1) and won the Tim Brown Invitational at Skidmore and the Williams Spring Invitational. The junior finished in the top 20 in every event this season. Boyd also finished sixth in the field of 50 golfers at the NESCAC Championship.
Zheng is the first Bowdoin golfer to garner the NESCAC Rookie of the Year honor. The newcomer averaged a 75.0 in his first year as a Polar Bear and posted five top-20 finishes this season, including a fifth-place finish at the CBB Tournament and a ninth-place finish at the NESCAC Championship.
Pendergast earns his first NESCAC Coach of the Year honor at the helm of the Jumbos. Pendergast led Tufts to its first NESCAC Championship in program history on April 28 at Brunswick Golf Club in Brunswick, Maine. The Jumbos were an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship and made their first NCAA appearance where the team finished 34th. Pendergast is the second Tufts coach to be recognized with the award (Bob Sheldon, 2001-02).
