National Champions! Amherst Outlasts Conn. College in PK Shootout

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Playing in its fourth national championship game in five seasons, the No. 8 Amherst College men's soccer team avenged a loss in the 2021 NCAA Divisoin III National Championship game to NESCAC rival Conn. College in the 2024 final played at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the campus of UNLV.

The Mammoths and Camels played scoreless soccer for 110 minutes and needed sudden-death penalties to determine a winner. Amherst outlasted Conn. College in the shootout earning a 4-3 edge to claim the program's second national title and the first since 2015.


Amherst made the Camels defend 17 corner kicks and held a 24-13 edge in shots in the contest. Connecticut College goalkeeper Peter Silvester made several saves to keep the Mammoths off the scoreboard during the 110 minutes of action and was credited with six stops and had three in the penalty kick shootout. Max Landa made three saves in the contest.

Each side scored twice in the first five rounds of the shootout forcing sudden-death penalties. Both teams converted in the sixth round. In the deciding seventh round, the Camels were stopped while Simon Kalinauskas converted his opportunity to lift the Mammoths to the 2024 title.

Amherst finishes the season with a 16-2-4 record while Conn. College wraps up the year at 14-3-7.

NOTES:The national championship game between the Mammoths and Camels was the third meeting between the two teams this season. Amherst defeated Conn. College, 1-0, in the second game of the season on September 7 and the Camels (the No. 6 seed) ousted the Mammoths (the No. 3 seed) from the NESCAC Tournament in the quarterfinal round on November 2. Conn. College, the 2024 NESCAC Champions, advanced on penalties, 4-2, after the teams played to a 1-1 draw. The Camels went on to win their first NESCAC title.
 
The 2024 final marked the third time in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship that two NESCAC teams squared off for the title. The Mammoths have been involved in all three matches.
