HADLEY, Mass. – The Middlebury Panthers and the Tufts Jumbos each picked up two individual awards when the NESCAC Men's Soccer honors were announced on Wednesday. Middlebury's Luke Madden was lauded as the NESCAC Player of the Year and teammate Keagan Harder was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Tufts' Max Clivio was named Defensive Player of the Year and the Jumbos' coaches were voted the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.
Madden, who earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team for the second year in a row, is the fifth player in program history to earn NESCAC Player of the Year and the first since 2014. Madden joins Harrison Watkins (2010) as the only Panther defender to secure the honor. The senior has logged 1,439 minutes on the pitch this season and helped lead Middlebury to the eighth-best shutout percentage in Division III at 0.611 and a conference-best 10 shutouts. Madden has also contributed on the offensive end, tallying three goals and three assists. Middlebury, the NESCAC Runners-Up, received an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament and hosts Hunter in a first-round game on Saturday in the Panthers' seventh consecutive appearance in the postseason tournament.
Clivio was named to the All-NESCAC First Team for the second consecutive season and is the first Jumbo to be named NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year. The graduate student has played over 1,100 minutes and started all 14 games he has played this season. Clivio has been part of a Jumbo defensive unit that has a goals against average of 0.43 which ranks fourth in Division III. He has also recorded two points on a pair of assists to contribute to the Tufts offense. Tufts was an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament and hosts Westfield State on Saturday in a first-round match.
Harder is the fourth Middlebury Panther to earn the NESCAC Rookie of the Year distinction, joining David LaRocca (2004), Tyler Macnee (2008), and Adam Glaser (2013). Harder has appeared in all 18 games and tallied a team-best six goals with two assists. The forward has recorded five multi-point performances in his first season at Middlebury.
The Tufts staff led by Kyle Dezotell is recognized as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year for the fifth time since 2000. Dezotell directed the team to an unbeaten regular season, the best mark in Dezotell's career at Tufts, and the Jumbos' best regular season record since 2018. Tufts, one of three unbeaten teams remaining in Division III, grabbed the No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Tournament for the first time since 2018 and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Jumbos, who are making their 10th straight NCAA appearance, will host first and second-round games on November 16 and 17.
