HADLEY, Mass. – The Wesleyan Cardinals were selected for three of the four NESCAC Women’s Soccer individual awards announced on Wednesday. Tufts junior Elsi Aires was named the NESCAC Player of the Year while Wesleyan junior Molly Brumbach was selected as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year and teammate Sheridan Snow garnered NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors. The Cardinals’ coaching staff was voted as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.
Aires is just the second Jumbo to receive the NESCAC Player of the Year honor (Ariel Samuelson, 2005). The junior, who was named to the All-NESCAC First Team for the second consecutive season, leads the NESCAC in points (25) and ranks second in goals scored (10) while handing out a team-best five assists. Aires helped Tufts earn the No. 2 seed in the NESCAC Championship and advance to the semifinals for the second time in three years and 11th time overall. Aires and the Jumbos’ earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and will face Rowan in a first-round match on Saturday (Nov. 16).
Brumbach, an All-NESCAC selection for the second year in a row, is the first Cardinal to be named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year. The junior led the Cardinals to an unbeaten regular season and the No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Championship. Brumbach leads the NESCAC in shutouts (9) and ranks second in the league in save percentage (.869) while owning a 0.54 goals against average which is third in the NESCAC. The Cardinals were an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament and face SUNY Brockport in a first-round game on Saturday (Nov. 16).
Snow is the third Wesleyan player to garner the NESCAC Rookie of the Year honor joining Grace Devanny (2019) and Laura Kurash (2009). The first-year defender has been part of a defensive unit that has given up just eight goals over 17 games. Snow has started all 17 games and played over 1,400 minutes as a rookie. She has also contributed two goals, including one game-winner, for the Cardinals.
The Wesleyan coaches were selected by their peers as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year. The Cardinal staff earns the honor for the second time in four years. Wesleyan, led by head coach Eva Meredith, guided the Cardinals to an unbeaten regular season, posted a program record 15-game unbeaten streak, earned the No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Championship, and hosted the semifinals and final of the NESCAC Tournament for the first time in program history. The Cardinals stand at 13-1-3 and received an at-large spot in the NCAA Tournament field for their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAAs.
