HADLEY, Mass. – Middlebury and Williams garnered individual awards as the 2024 NESCAC Field Hockey honors were announced on Tuesday. Panther teammates Caroline Segal and Amy Griffin were named the NESCAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively while Williams rookie Ellie Smith was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, and the Ephs' coaching staff was voted as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.
Segal is the seventh Middlebury player to be named the Offensive Player of the Year. The midfielder leads the NESCAC and the Panthers in points (44), goals (18), and is tied for third in assists (8). The senior, who also earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team, helped Middlebury secure the top seed in the NESCAC Championship for the seventh year in a row and advance to the semifinals for the seventh consecutive tournament. The Panthers, the six-time defending NCAA Champions, are headed back to the NCAA Tournament. Middlebury was an at-large selection and a first-round bye. The Panthers will host second and third-round games on November 16 and 17.
Griffin is the first player in NESCAC Field Hockey history to repeat as Defensive Player of the Year and 2024 marks the fifth time a Panther has been selected for the defensive honor. The senior ranks third on the team in points (30) with nine goals and 12 assists. Griffin's dozen helpers rank second among the NESCAC leaders.
Smith is the second Williams player in three years to garner the Rookie of the Year honor and the fourth player overall. In her first season at Williams, Smith started all 16 games she has played and leads the conference in goals against average (0.74) and save percentage (.833). The rookie has recorded a NESCAC-best seven shutouts and owns a 13-3 record.
The Williams coaching staff of Alex Barrale and Kate Lenox is honored for the third time in Barrale's career with the Ephs. Barrale and the staff were last honored in 2001 and 2004. Barrale earned her 250th career victory at Williams and 300th career win as a Division III head coach earlier this season and guided Williams to the No. 2 seed in the NESCAC Championship. The Ephs reached the semifinals for the third straight season and the seventh time in eight tournaments. Williams was an at-large selection to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament and earned a first-round bye. The Ephs will host second and third-round games on November 16 and 17.
