HADLEY, Mass. – With a 1-1 draw versus Connecticut College in the regular season finale the Wesleyan Cardinals secured the top seed in the 2024 NESCAC Women’s Soccer Championship for the first time in program history.
The 2024 tournament begins with quarterfinal action on Saturday, November 2 at the higher seeds. The four quarterfinal winners will square off in the semifinal round on Saturday, November 9 at the highest remaining seed. The championship game is set for Sunday, November 10 at the site of the semifinal host.
Tiebreakers
Amherst and Middlebury finished with 19 points. In head-to-head competition, both teams tied. Both teams have identical league win percentages and conference wins after finishing with 5-1-4 records. In comparing results against the top four teams including all teams at the fourth spot (Wesleyan, Tufts, Williams, Amherst, and Middlebury), Amherst went 1-1-2 and Middlebury went 0-1-3. Amherst is the No. 4 seed and Middlebury earned the No. 5 seed.
No. 1 Wesleyan Cardinals (12-0-3, 7-0-3 NESCAC) vs. No. 8 Connecticut College Camels (5-8-2, 2-6-2 NESCAC)
- Wesleyan is making its sixth consecutive appearance in the NESCAC Tournament.
- The Cardinals have played in two of the last three championship matches.
- Wesleyan went unbeaten in the regular season for the first time in program history and is riding a program-record 15 match unbeaten streak entering the tournament.
- The Cardinals have allowed just five goals this season to lead the conference.
- Connecticut College has qualified for the NESCAC Championship for the fifth straight season.
- The Camels last NESCAC Semifinal appearance was in 2014, the same year Conn. won its lone NESCAC title.
- Wesleyan and Connecticut College meet for the second time in four days in the quarterfinal match after playing to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday. The game will be the first meeting between the schools in the NESCAC Championship.
No. 2 Tufts Jumbos (12-2-1, 7-2-1 NESCAC) vs. No. 7 Hamilton Continentals (6-6-3, 2-5-3 NESCAC)
- Tufts is making its 11th consecutive appearance in the NESCAC Tournament and 23rd overall.
- The Jumbos are the No. 2 seed for the first time since 2007.
- Tufts enters the quarterfinals having won eight straight games.
- The Jumbos boast the highest-scoring output of any NESCAC team with 48 goals this season.
- Hamilton is making its second straight appearance in the NESCAC Championship and has qualified for the eighth time in nine seasons.
- The Continentals are the No. 7 seed for the second year in a row.
- Tufts and Hamilton played to a 2-2 draw on Sept. 21 and the NESCAC postseason series stands at 1-1-0.
- The Continentals won the last meeting in the 2021 quarterfinals, 1-0.
No. 3 Williams Ephs (8-4-3, 6-2-2 NESCAC) vs. No. 6 Colby Mules (9-4-2, 4-4-2 NESCAC)
- Williams is the No. 3 seed for the first time since 2019 and is making its third straight appearance in the NESCAC Tournament and 23rd overall.
- The Ephs’ defense has allowed a NESCAC-low five goals this season.
- Williams went 2-0-1 in its final three regular season games.
- Colby has qualified for the NESCAC Tournament for the first time since 2018 and is the No. 6 seed for the first time since 2012.
- The Mules’ nine wins are the most since the 2006 campaign.
- Colby is seeking its first NESCAC postseason win since 2006.
- Williams recorded a 1-0 win at Colby on Sept. 28 and is 4-1-0 versus the Mules in the NESCAC Tournament series.
- The Ephs earned a 3-1 win in the 2018 quarterfinals the last time the teams met in the NESCAC Championship.
No. 4 Amherst Mammoths (9-1-5, 5-1-4 NESCAC) vs. No. 5 Middlebury Panthers (8-1-6, 5-1-4 NESCAC)
- Amherst has qualified for every NESCAC Championship (24) and is the No. 4 seed for the first time since 2019.
- The Mammoths are the two-time defending champions and own seven NESCAC titles overall.
- Amherst has advanced to the semifinals in the last seven consecutive tournaments.
- After a one-year hiatus, the Panthers are back in the NESCAC Tournament for the 23rd time.
- Middlebury is the No. 5 seed for the first time since 2014.
- The Panthers have won five NESCAC crowns, the last coming in 2021.
- Amherst and Middlebury, which have given up eight goals each this season, played to a 0-0 tie in Amherst on Sept. 21.
- Middlebury holds a 5-4-2 edge in the NESCAC Tournament series.
- The teams played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie in the 2021 semifinals and Middlebury advanced to the final on penalty kicks, 4-3.
