NESCAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Abby Schwartz – Amherst – Sr. – F – Alpharetta, Ga.
Schwartz scored four goals in three NESCAC contests as the Mammoths went 3-0-0 last week. The senior scored twice in a 4-3 win over Connecticut College on Tuesday, scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Bates on Saturday, and added another marker in a 3-0 win over Colby on Sunday. Schwartz ranks third in the NESCAC with 12 points and is tied for the league lead in assists with four.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Bates – Junior
Mollie Franklin (Framingham, Mass.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career in a 1-1 draw versus the University of New England on Tuesday on the blue turf in Biddeford. Franklin was able to chip the ball over the head of the UNE goalkeeper in the fifth minute of action.
Bowdoin - First-year
Mia Williams (Winchester, Mass.) and senior
Samaya Bernardo (Kensington, Md.) scored 13 minutes apart in the second half as the Polar Bears rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Middlebury on Saturday, 2-1.
Colby – Sophomore
Fati Salifu (Salisbury, Conn.) scored with one minute remaining Tuesday against Hartford, completing Colby's comeback and lifting the Mules to a 2-1 victory.
Sophie DiGrande (Nahant, Mass.), Colby's leading scorer from a season ago, tied the match only moments earlier for the sophomore’s first of the season.
Conn. College - Forward
Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt) had a strong week as the Connecticut College women's soccer team went 2-1-0. In the opener against Amherst on Tuesday night, Gazo helped to spark the comeback effort against the Mammoths, tallying her first goal of the season just before halftime. On Saturday, the sophomore added an insurance marker for her second goal in as many games, as the Camels defeated John Jay 3-1 in non-conference action.
Hamilton – Sophomore
Nieve Tonna (Huntington, N.Y.) allowed one goal and made 14 saves in 225 minutes in net during a 2-0-1 week. Tonna made eight saves in a 1-1 tie at Tufts and stopped six shots in a 2-0 win at Wesleyan. The sophomore played the entire second half in a 3-0 triumph at Utica.
Middlebury –
Gigi Day (Washington, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal against Bates on Sunday. The marker was the rookie’s first golden tally and second career goal. Day beat a defender and slipped the ball past the goalie to give Middlebury the 1-0 victory and critical points in the NESCAC standings.
Trinity – Senior
Tori Simas (Newburyport, Mass.) delivered the game-tying goal in the 58th minute, forcing a 1-1 tie against Wesleyan.
Tufts – Senior
Thalia Greenberg (Mill Valley, Calif.) scored in a 3-0 win over MIT and netted her second goal of the week in a 1-1 draw against Hamilton on Saturday as the Jumbos went a 2-0-1 last week.
Wesleyan – Sophomore
Waverly Meyers (Stamford, Conn.) continued her torrid goal-scoring pace to start the season, netting her sixth goal of 2023 a 1-1 tie with Trinity on Saturday.
Williams – First-year defender
Reece Willison (Simsbury, Conn.) played nearly every minute and was instrumental in the Eph’s clean sheets a pair of NESCAC wins over Colby (4-0) and Bowdoin (2-0).
