2022 NESCAC Field Hockey Awards Announced

HADLEY, Mass. - Williams senior Emily Batchelor has been named the NESCAC Player of the Year while Bowdoin's Georgie Coetzer was tabbed as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year and Kiki Higgins garnered the NESCAC Rookie of the Year honor in a vote of the league's coaches. Middlebury's Katharine DeLorenzo was selected as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by her peers.

Batchelor is the third Eph to earn the Player of the Year honor (Molly Jennings - 2002, Meighan McGowan – 2006) and earns a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team for the second straight season. The senior has scored the most goals in the NESCAC (19) and ranks second in the conference in points (42). The forward has tallied four game-winning goals this season and posted six or more points in a single game three times. Batchelor helped Williams reach the NESCAC Semifinals for the fourth time in five seasons and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006.

Coetzer is the fourth Polar Bear to be named NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year (Ella Curran – 2011, Brooke Phinney – 2012, Kim Kahnweiler, 2015) and is a repeat All-NESCAC First Team honoree. Although a defender, Coetzer tied for the team lead in goals (9) and ranked second in points (23). Coetzer also netted three game-winning goals and tallied a league-best three defensive saves in 2022. Coetzer finished the season recording at least one point in six of the final seven games, including a 6-point effort in a win over Colby. Coetzer helped Bowdoin extend its streak of qualifying for every NESCAC Field Hockey Tournament.

Higgins is the third Williams player to earn Rookie of the Year honors (Emily Grannon – 2002, Meighan McGowan – 2005). Higgins ranks second on the team in scoring with 21 points on seven goals and seven assists. The seven helpers are the most among rookies in the NESCAC this season. Higgins has netted four-game winning goals, including a tally with 12 seconds left in the NESCAC Quarterfinal game versus Amherst to propel the Ephs into the NESCAC Semifinals.

DeLorenzo becomes the first individual to garner the NESCAC Coach of the Year honor five straight seasons and has won the award six times overall. DeLorenzo, who is in her 22nd season at the helm of the Panthers, led Middlebury to its fifth consecutive NESCAC title this season and ninth overall. The Panthers have earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 19th season in a row and will host second and third-round games.
