NESCAC Field Hockey Awards Announced

HADLEY, Mass. – Middlebury senior midfielder Erin Nicholas is the NESCAC Player of the Year for the third consecutive season as voted by the conference coaches. She becomes the first player in NESCAC history to garner the honor three times and is the fifth Panther to be named NESCAC Player of the Year (Char Glessner – 2001, Janie Mackey – 2004, Lauren Greer – 2011 & 2012, Catherine Fowler – 2013).

Nicholas, the 2017 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, led Middlebury to its fourth consecutive NESCAC title and eighth overall. She scored three goals, including the game-winner in the Panthers' 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Bowdoin in the NESCAC Championship game. Nicholas leads the NESCAC in scoring with 22 goals, including eight game-winners, and 51 points. She also earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team for the third year in a row. Middlebury, the three-time defending NCAA Champion, will host an NCAA regional at Kohn Field where it has a 45-game win streak.

Tufts senior Sophie Schoeni was selected as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year. She is the fifth Jumbo to garner the honor (Margi Scholtes – 2008, Taylor Dyer – 2010, Issy Del Priore – 2017, Marguerite Salamone – 2019). Schoeni also earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team after being named to the Second Team in 2019. She has started all 16 games and registered 11 points on three goals and five assists this season. Schoeni helped the Jumbos earn the No. 2 seed in the NESCAC Championship and advance to the semifinals. Tufts earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will host Johnson & Wales in the first round.

Middlebury first-year midfielder Amy Griffin was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. She is the second Panther in a row and fourth since 2015 to be selected for the honor (Lauren Greer – 2009, Grace Jennings – 2015, Erin Nicholas – 2017, Katie George – 2019). Griffin has started 17 of 18 games and ranks second in the NESCAC with 10 assists while recording 16 points for the Panthers.

Middlebury head coach Katharine DeLorenzo was selected as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by her peers. DeLorenzo becomes the first coach in the award's history to garner the honor four straight seasons. DeLorenzo, who is in her 21st season at the helm of the Panthers, led Middlebury to its fourth consecutive NESCAC title this season.
