HADLEY, Mass. – Amherst sophomore (Pinecrest, Fla.) is the NESCAC Player of the Year as voted by the league’s coaches. Giammattei, last season’s NESCAC Rookie of the Year, becomes the second straight player since 2000 to earn Rookie of the Year honors one year and Player of the Year honors the following season (AJ Marcucci, Conn. College - 2017, 2018). Giammattei is the second Mammoth to garner the award, joining Spencer Noon (2011).
A forward, Giammattei has exploded for 20 goals, including seven game-winning tallies, and 44 points to lead the NESCAC in both categories. As a team, the Mammoths have netted 42 goals and average 2.47 goals per game to lead the conference. Giammattei, who also earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team, led Amherst to an unbeaten mark in league play for the fourth time since 2012 and the top seed in the NESCAC Tournament. After reaching the semifinals, the Mammoths earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will travel to Keene State for the opening rounds.
Middlebury first-year
Ryan Grady (Deerfield, Ill.) was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. He is the fourth Panther to garner the honor since 2000, joining David LaRocca (2004), Tyler Macnee (2008), and Adam Glaser (2013). A goalkeeper, Grady anchors a Middlebury defense that has a league-low 0.56 goals against average. He leads the NESCAC with a .882 save percentage and 75 total stops. He also ranks fourth with a 0.55 goals against average to go with seven shutouts. Middlebury advanced to the NESCAC Championship game and finished as runner-up. The Panthers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will travel to RPI for the first and second rounds.
Tufts head coach
Josh Shapiro was selected as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers. He earns the honor for the second time in three years and the third time overall in his 10 years at Tufts. Shapiro guided the Jumbos to the program’s second NESCAC title, which it also won in 2017. Tufts, the defending national champion, earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will host a regional for the third year in a row.
