Bowdoin Earns 4-0 Win Over Amherst in Women's Ice Hockey First Round

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin
women's hockey team scored three third period goals, and rode a
strong performance by Emily McKissock to a 4-0 win over Amherst in
today's NESCAC Tournament first round action. With the victory,
Bowdoin (20-3-1) advances to play in NESCAC Semifinals next weekend
in Middlebury against a yet-to-be determined opponent. Amherst
(6-15-1) ends their season with the loss.
Heidi Alexander turned in strong
performance in net for Amherst turning away a barrage of early
Bowdoin shots and withstanding constant Polar Bear pressure to keep
the score knotted at zero at the end of the first period. The Polar
Bears outshot Amherst 10-2 in the first 20 minutes. Alexander
remained strong in the early minutes of the second period, but was
unable to keep the Bears off the board as Shelly Chessie knocked
home a rebound at 7:55 of the second for a 1-0 Bowdoin lead.
Bowdoin added to their lead at 3:54
of the second period when Jen Pelkey one-timed a Jess Burke
centering-pass into the net for a 2-0 lead. The Polar Bears went
ahead by three at 6:42 of the third when Beth Muir knocked a
bouncing puck past Alexander and into the net for a 3-0 lead. Just
12 seconds later the Bears took a four goal advantage with Gillian
McDonald one-timing a Britney Carr pass over Alexander's blocker
and into the net for a 4-0 lead. Emily McKissock made 11 saves in
the shut-out victory. Heidi Alexander made 33 saves in the loss.
