PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State scored two third-period goals eight seconds apart to break a 3-3 tie and post a 5-3 victory over visiting Williams in an NCAA Quarterfinal matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals improve to 27-2 and advance to the NCAA Final Four where they will face Adrian on March 15 at the University of St. Thomas (MN). Williams ends its season at 21-5-3.
Williams took a quick 1-0 lead when Meghan Halloran scored 19 seconds into the contest. Abby Brustad and Mia Carroll picked up assists on the opening play. The Ephs would carry the 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.
Plattsburgh's Madison Walker evened the score at 3:08 of the second period and Holly Schmelzer gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead with a goal just over a minute later at the 4:28 mark of the stanza.
Halloran converted a power-play opportunity at 16:01 for her second tally of the game and leveled the score at 2-2 with four minutes remaining in the period. The Cardinals answered again when Mackenzie Millen scored an unassisted goal at the 17-minute mark to give Plattsburgh a 3-2 lead at the break.
Brustad's second point of the game, a goal at the 8:19 mark of the third period, evened the score for the third time at 3-3. Plattsburgh responded four minutes later. Nicole Unsworth scored the go-ahead goal at 12:41 and Millen's second tally came at the 12:49 mark to give the Cardinals a two-goal cushion the rest of the way.
Kassi Abbot was credited with 22 stops to pick up the win in the Plattsburgh net, while Chloe Heiting made 31 saves for Williams.
