WAYLAND, Mass. – Williams won the 2019 NESCAC Men’s Golf Championship Fall Qualifier at Sandy Burr Country Club by two strokes over host Tufts. The Ephs posted a two-day total of 586, while the Jumbos finished the tournament with a 36-hole total of 588. Tufts tallied the best team score on Sunday (292), but could not overtake the Ephs on the final round.
Williams will host the 2020 NESCAC Men’s Golf Championship on April 25-26 at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass.
Tufts, Hamilton, and Trinity will join the Ephs at the championship in April. The Jumbos, who hosted the qualifier for the first time in program history, return to the championship field for the third consecutive year and third time in program history. Hamilton finished third with a two-day total of 595 and advances to the championship for the second straight year and ninth time overall. Trinity, the two-time defending NESCAC Champion, started the day in sixth place but posted a team score of 295 on Sunday to move up into fourth and claim the final spot in the spring championship. The Bantams will play in the championship event for the 13th straight year.
Williams teammates Will Kannegieser and Sam Goldenring finished 1-2 on the individual leaderboard. Kannegieser, the 2017 NESCAC Championship medalist, finished first with a 36-hole total of 140 (-4). He was one of three golfers to shoot under par on Sunday, firing a 1-under 71 to go with his first-round score of 69. Goldenring finished the tournament 1-under par with a score of 143 (70-73).
Trinity's Max Edminster posted a 71 (-1) on Sunday to finish third overall (74-71-145), while Henry Hughes of Tufts had one of the biggest moves on the leaderboard, shaving six strokes off Saturday's round of 76 and posting a 70 on Sunday, the lowest round of the day, for a 36-hole total of 146 to place fourth. Hamilton teammates Jack McKeon (74-73-147) and Billy Geach (73-74-147) finished in a tie for fifth.
In addition to the top four qualifying teams, the top four individual scorers outside of the qualifying teams are eligible to compete at the NESCAC Championship. The top four individuals were Jordan Bessalel (Middlebury), Phin Choukas (Middlebury), Julien Lewis (Bates), and Cameron Clark (Amherst).
