WAYLAND, Mass. – The Williams Ephs combined for a team score of 291 and own a four-stroke lead over Amherst following the first round of the 2019 NESCAC Men’s Golf Championship Fall Qualifier, hosted by Tufts at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, Mass.
The Mammoths posted a team score of 295, while Tufts stands in third at 296. Hamilton is three strokes back at 299 for fourth place and is followed closely by Middlebury (300) and Trinity (302).
Williams seniors Will Kannegieser and Sam Goldenring stand 1-2 on the individual leaderboard. Kannegieser led all golfers with a round of 69, while Goldenring shot a 2-under 70. Kannegieser’s round was highlighted by birdies on the first three holes and both golfers eagled the par-5, 450-yard, 11th hole.
Middlebury senior Jeffrey Giguere was the third golfer to finish under par with a round of 71. Seniors Brandon Karr of Tufts and Will Lonnquist of Amherst are tied for fourth after finishing with even-par rounds of 72 to round out the top five golfers.
Sunday’s final round begins at 10 a.m. The top four teams at the qualifier and the top four individuals outside of the top four teams will advance to the 2020 NESCAC Men’s Golf Championship set for April 25-26, 2020. The team with the top score over the two-day, 36-hole qualifier earns the right to host the championship.
