MEDFORD, Mass. - Following a big season-opening performance against Hamilton College which featured four touchdowns, senior running back Christian Shapiro was named as the Week 3 recipient of the NEFW/Grinold Chapter Gold Helmet Award. 

Shapiro, from South Salem, N.Y., and a graduate of John Jay-Cross River High School, ran for 110 yards on a workmanlike 27 carries (4.1 yards per carry) leading Tufts to a 42-28 victory over Hamilton College. Shapiro's four touchdown runs (17, 2, 1 and 2 yards) made him the first Tufts running back since 2018 to score four touchdowns in a game. Yale quarterback Dante Reno also earned the accolade. 

Shapiro is the first Tufts player to earn the accolade since Phil Lutz earned the award on November 12, 2022. 

For the twelfth straight year, the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the presenting sponsor for both the weekly and end-of-year Gold Helmet Awards presented to student-athletes from FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III institutions throughout New England. The awards will be presented at the NEFW Captains and Awards Banquet on December 10 at the Renaissance Framingham Hotel & Conference Center.
