Why did you chooseto be a Division III student-athlete?
I wanted to have a well-balanced collegiate experience and have the opportunity to become involved in fields outside of my specialized sport.
What is the best thing about being part of the NESCAC?
The emphasis on being a student-athlete and the high caliber of motivated individuals I am able to surround myself with.
You have a blank canvas, paint your perfect day. What does it look like?
I am waking up early, going for a 10 mile run in a beautiful area, and grabbing food with teammates after laying around for a while doing nothing (controversial take, but I'm going to Moes and getting the Moes Monday deal. Chipotle is overrated). Following the run, I am spending my day at a cool lake in Vermont/Maine and finding someone with a boat to go tubing. I am likely ending the day watching a good movie and laying outside to look at the stars.
What is your dream job/career?
I am planning on pursuing a career in clinical psychology as I have always had a passion for working with and helping others in whatever capacity they may need. I am not entirely sure which exact setting I would like to work in, but a clinical day program with adolescents sounds very appealing.
What extracurricular activities or service activities do you participate in?
I am President of ManOps, an a capella group on campus, and I work as the “stock specialist” for a student-run coffee shop (taking inventory and ordering/picking up milk/other items necessary). I wasn't planning on becoming involved in a capella, but one of the upperclassmen on the team heard I sang a bit in high school and signed me up for auditions my freshman year. I am so happy I made the decision to join the group as it has been an amazing experience and has allowed me to be a part of something truly special outside of my team.
Looking back on your collegeyears, what are you most proud of
I am most proud of always staying true to myself and trying to brighten up others’ days through stupid jokes whenever I can.
What’s your go-to warmup song?
This is an interesting take, but I'm going to go with Pachebel's Canon. I used to play cello and it helps calm me down and re-focus before races.
What is something you enjoy doing that you never get tired of?
I really love giving both solicited and unsolicited advice to my teammates about running or life in general.
If you weren’t playing your sport, what other sport would you want to try?
Probably basketball. I played a lot over COVID and was going tot ry out for the JV team in igh school my sophomore year until I got better at running and my coach turned down the idea.
What’s the best piece of career adviceyou’ve received from a professor or mentor?
“Never stop asking questions” - my Mom.
Have you studied abroad during your collegiate experience?
I just returned from a semester abroad in Granada, Spain where I was able to take a variety of Hispanic studies and cross-cultural psychology courses. Although I unfortunately missed indoor and outdoor track as a result, studying abroad was an amazing experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering.
What internships/research projects have you participated in
I worked at the Institute of Living in Hartford two summers ago, shadowing group therapy sessions across all levels of care and working individually with the children in the clinical day school program. This past summer, I worked as a behavior technician for children with autism instead of doing an internship/research as I am completing a year-long honors thesis during the academic year.
What’s a class outside of your major that you surprisingly liked?
I enjoyed astronomy as it taught a combination of both my academic and general interests.
What is the greatest lesson you have learnedfrom being a student-athlete?
I have learned a lot about discipline and developing intrinsic motivation for difficult training/tasks.
What is your favoriteplace on your campus?
Easily Commons (the Bates dining hall). Our whole team eats together and you never know what's going to happen next.
Who has been the most influential person to you during your time in college?
Coach Feldman has served as an amazing mentor and coach throughout my time at Bates. He is constantly challenging me to take difficult strides in becoming a better athlete and person overall. I can't thank him enough for the impact he has made on my life and the lives of all of my teammates.
What is the most memorable moment of your career at your school?
My breakthrough race at NESCACs in Cross Country last year.
What is something you enjoy doing when not in class or competing in your sport?
Listening to music/learning the guitar.
What skill do you have that has nothing to do with your sport?
I can beatbox a little bit.
