FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Kaden Bates drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining and Kye Robinson finished with 21 points as Mary Washington defeated defending national champion Trinity 64-61 in the NCAA Division III Final Four at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Trinity built a 16-point lead at 37-21 with 1:52 left in the first half, fueled by a balanced attack that saw six different players score. The Bantams shot 40 percent from 3-point range in the opening half and held the Eagles to just 29 percent shooting from the field.
Robinson, who went a perfect 12-of-12 from the free-throw line, anchored a second-half surge that saw the Eagles outscore Trinity 38-24 over the final 20 minutes. Jay Randall added 14 points and five rebounds, while Jadon Burgess contributed 12 points before fouling out.
The Mary Washington comeback effort was fueled by a 10-0 run. Trailing 61-54 with 4:27 left, the Eagles scored 10 straight points and closed the game with a 12- 2 spurt. Ulysses Young's fastbreak 3-pointer cut the deficit to 61-59 with 2:19 remaining, and after a series of empty Trinity possessions, Bates buried the go-ahead three off a Robinson assist with 24 seconds left to give the Eagles their first lead since the opening minutes.
Trinity's missed a potential tying three with six seconds left. Jarrel Okorougo led the Bantams with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Jared Berry added 13 off the bench
Mary Washington (29-3) advances to the national championship game for the first time in program history. The Eagles will play Emory on April 5 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Trinity's season ends at 29-3.
