NESCAC Football Weekly Release - Sept. 15, 2025

Every Monday during the season, NESCAC Players of the Week will be selected based on information submitted by the athletic communications offices at member institutions.

NESCAC Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jack Perry – Bates – Sr. – Quarterback – Newbury, Mass.
Perry came off the bench to throw three touchdown passes in Saturday's 26-23 double overtime win over Amherst. Entering the game, Perry had completed one pass in his collegiate career. Bates was down 23-7 entering the fourth quarter before rallying to force overtime, with Perry throwing two of his three touchdown passes in the final 15 minutes of regulation. Overall, Perry completed 7-of-14 passes for 110 yards and no interceptions. His three touchdown passes went to three different receivers, and his long throw of the night was a 35-yard strike with 1:52 left in regulation. That throw and the extra point sent the game into overtime. It was the first home win for Bates over Amherst since 1999.
 
NESCAC Football Defensive Player of the Week
Cooper Bunnell – Colby – So. – Defensive Line – Rumson, N.J.
Bunnell helped Colby's defense hold Trinity to its fewest point tally since the 2021 season and Colby's first win over the Bantams since the 1995 campaign. His 3.5 sacks for a loss of 23 yards came in the second half, with 2.5 in the final quarter, as Colby protected its lead with constant pressure in the pocket (seven sacks, five turnovers). The sophomore defensive lineman also batted away a pass at the line of scrimmage on Trinity's final possession.

NESCAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Marcos Ruiz – Bates – Jr. – Kicker – Haskell, N.J.
Ruiz made both field goal attempts and both PATs on Saturday in a 26-23 double-overtime win over Amherst. The junior’s game-winning 24-yard field goal in the second overtime helped Bates defeat Amherst at home for the first time since 1999.

NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst – Marek Hill (Oak Park, Ill.) accounted for all three Mammoths' touchdowns in a 26-23 double-overtime loss to Bates on Saturday. The sophomore completed 18-of-29 pass attempts for 162 yards and two touchdown strikes, with one interception. Hill also ran eight times for 16 yards and had one rushing touchdown, leading Amherst to 23 points in the third quarter … Junior Carson Skotak (Houston, Texas) led the Mammoths' defensive effort at Bates, making 17 tackles, 11 solo, recovering two fumbles, recording a pass break-up, and one quarterback hurry.

BatesRyan Rozich (Cromwell, Conn.) tallied a team-high 11 total tackles, with five solo stops and 1.5 tackles for loss, in the win over Amherst. The junior also recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter that led to a Bates touchdown.

Bowdoin – First-year defensive back Steven Vargo (Tampa, Fla.) had seven solo tackles, nine overall, and a pass breakup to lead the Polar Bear defense against Tufts on Saturday. Bowdoin held the Jumbos to just 13 points, their lowest point total since September of 2024 … Punter Caden Perry (Houston, Texas) had five kicks against Tufts, averaging 40.2 yards per boot. The junior dropped a pair of kicks inside the Jumbos’ 20, including a career-long 57-yard punt.
 
Colby - Jack Nye (Clinton, Conn.) hauled in seven passes for 99 yards in Colby's opening day victory over Trinity. The sophomore set up the game's final touchdown with a contested 15-yard completion that spotted the ball at Trinity's 1-yard line, and six of his seven catches went for Colby first downs.

Hamilton – Junior Luke Kurzum (Caldwell, N.J.) threw for a career-high 298 yards with two touchdowns in a 24-17 setback against Williams. Kurzum completed 26-of-40 passes. Running back Alastair Orr (Rumson, N.J.) caught eight passes for 128 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown reception, the sophomore's first for the Continentals … Mat Bucher (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) was credited with a career-high 11 tackles in the Continentals' 24-17 setback against Williams. Bucher assisted on a tackle for a one-yard loss … Henry Rubey (New Albany, Ohio), who was punting for the first time in the senior's collegiate career, averaged 42.67 yards on three boots with a long of 48 yards. Rubey also ran seven yards for a first down on a fake punt.

Middlebury – Senior Mike Ahonen (Wellesley, Mass.) had a solid outing in the program’s season opener against Wesleyan. The Panther recorded eight receptions for 108 yards. Six of Ahonen’s seven grabs went for 10 yards or more, including a 21-yard catch that set Middlebury up for its first scoring drive of the contest. The wideout posted 100+ yards receiving for the third time in his career … Junior Casy Adjei (McKinney, Texas) put together an impressive outing on the defensive line in Saturday’s first contest of the year. The lineman tied for the team lead with seven tackles (four solo) and 1.0 tackle for loss of three yards. Adjei helped anchor a Middlebury defense that held the Cardinals to under 100 yards rushing and just 2.7 yards per attempt … Senior Tony Wang (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) held down the kicking duties for the Panthers in the season opener. The kicker tallied a career-high five points versus Wesleyan, including drilling an 18-yard field goal for his first made kick in a Middlebury uniform. Wang also handled kickoff duties, tallying 174 yards on three kicks.

Trinity – Senior Nolan O'Brien (Sudbury, Mass.) led the Bantams’ offense with four receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown in a 13-6 loss at Colby to open the 2025 season ... Aaron Poawui (Silver Spring, Md.) anchored the Bantams’ defense with a career-high nine tackles at Colby.

Tufts – Junior signal caller Justin Keller (Ridgefield, Conn.) made his first career start for the Jumbos and led Tufts to a 13-0 win over Bowdoin on Saturday. The junior helped Tufts control the clock with over 37 minutes of possession, going 12-for-19 for 143 yards while adding 35 yards on the ground. Keller successfully navigated three scoring drives and another that stalled at the Bowdoin 5-yard line … After missing the 2024 campaign, senior Suleiman Abuaqel (River Forest, Ill.) posted four tackles, including 1.5 sacks, in his first action of the year. The senior’s second sack of the game was on a third down late in the first half to knock Bowdoin out of field goal range. On the next play, Tufts picked off Bowdoin to take over possession while keeping the shutout intact. Tufts posted its first road shutout since 2018 … Vaughn Seelicke (Little Rock, Ark.) made two of three field goal attempts in a 13-0 win over Bowdoin. The senior also connected on the only PAT of the game. Seelicke has 29 field goals in 28 career games with the Jumbos. 

Wesleyan - In his first career game, Donte Kelly (Meriden, Conn.) made seven catches for 118 yards and one touchdown. Kelly scored the Cardinals’ first touchdown of the season as the first-year took a shovel pass to the house from 11 yards out. The wideout added a 51-yard reception in a last-minute drive to end the first half that set up a Wesleyan field goal. Five of the seven catches came in the third quarter, including a 31-yard reception that set up a touchdown. Kelly also returned a kickoff 34 yards and had receptions of 10 and 14 yards on a touchdown drive that put Wesleyan ahead by three scores in the fourth quarter, sealing a 31-17 Cardinal win … Senior AJ Morris (Secaucus, N.J.) returned his first career interception 60 yards for a touchdown that put the Cardinals up 24-3. That 60-yard pick-six capped a run of 24 unanswered points from Wesleyan in a game that ended in a 31-17 Cardinal win. 
 
Williams - Junior quarterback Owen Johansen (Northport, N.Y.) rushed 11 times for 84 yards and one touchdown, while also completing 5-of-8 passes for 51 yards in a 24-17 season-opening victory at Hamilton … Sophomore Luke Mangini (Moreland Hills, Ohio) recorded seven solo tackles, one assisted tackle, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one sack in a 24-17 season-opening victory at Hamilton Saturday afternoon in Clinton, New York … Leonardo Maiuolo (San Jose, Calif.) went 1-for-1 on field goals (26 yards) and 3-for-3 on PATs at Hamilton. The junior placed 2-of-4 punts inside Hamilton's 20-yard line, while recording a game-high, 51-yard punt.
