NESCAC Announces Men's Track & Field Awards

HADLEY, Mass. – Middlebury senior Xander Swann is the NESCAC's Sabasteanski Award winner as the Most Outstanding Performer. Amherst newcomer Gavin Schmidt was named the Most Outstanding Rookie and the Middlebury staff was selected as the Coaching Staff of the Year by its peers.
 
Swann is the fourth Panther to garner the Sabasteanski Award and the first since the 2019 campaign. The senior picked up three All-NESCAC citations during the NESCAC Championship meet. Swann won the 400 meters with a personal best time of 47.92 and is the ninth Middlebury athlete to win the event. He also placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 51.96 which ranks third in NCAA Division III. Swann closed out the NESCAC meet running the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay that earned All-NESCAC honors with a third-place finish and time of 3:17.09. Swann's efforts helped Middlebury win its third NESCAC Championship and its first since 2019.

Amherst newcomer Gavin Schmidt is the third consecutive Mammoth to be named the NESCAC Most Outstanding Rookie. The rookie won the NESCAC title in both the shot put and discus, becoming the first Amherst athlete to win both events since 2000. Schmidt broke an 85-year-old Amherst program record in the shot put with his winning mark of 15.91 meters. The former record of 15.05 meters was set in 1940 by Prescott Coan. Schmidt is the first Amherst athlete to win a NESCAC title in the shot put since 2000. In the discus, Schmidt recorded a winning throw of 44.57. As a team, Amherst finished as the NESCAC Runners-Up for the second consecutive season

The Middlebury staff was voted as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers after leading the Panthers to their third NESCAC title. The staff, led by head coach Martin Beatty includes assistant coaches: Nicole Wilkerson, Bruce Ingersoll, Jason McCallum, Kevin Chu, Max Memeger, Jake Rigoli, Langan Garrett. The 2025 season marks the fourth time the Middlebury staff has been recognized (2014, 2018, 2019, 2025).
